James William McCutcheon (May 23, 1924 – January 9, 2002) was an American character actor known for his appearances in film, television, and theatre, several of which earned him Emmy and Tony awards.

Early life

McCutcheon was born in Russell, Kentucky, the son of Robert Kenna McCutcheon, a railroad conductor and Florence Louise (née Elam). Leo the Leprechaun on The Howdy Doody Show was McCutcheon's first big role. He starred in Uncle Wally on PBS' Sesame Street, where he earned an Emmy.

He appeared in the 1989 film Steel Magnolias, in which he played Owen Jenkins, the belle of Ouiser Boudreaux (Shirley MacLaine).

Career

He appeared on film and on stage. His first film appearance was in 1964's Santa Claus Conquers the Martians; later on, he appeared in films such as Family Business and Steel Magnolias. McCutcheon appeared on several Tootsie Roll television commercials in the 1960s, making him a familiar face to a young audience. Moonface Martin's role in Anything Goes has earned him a Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical.
