Wolf Martin Garber (May 18, 1922 – October 17, 2019), also known as Bill Macy, was an American television, film, and stage actor best known for his appearance in the CBS television series Maude (1972–78).

Early life

Bill Macy was born in Revere, Massachusetts, the son of Mollie (née Friedopfer; 1889-1969), and Michael Garber (1884–1974), a craftsman. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, in the East Flatbush neighborhood. Since graduating from Samuel J. Tilden High School, he served in the United States Army from 1942 to 1946, including the 594th Engineer Boat and Shore Regiment, stationed in the Philippines, Japan, and New Guinea. He worked as a taxi driver for a decade before being cast as Walter Matthau's understudy in Once More, with Feeling on Broadway in 1958. On the soap opera The Edge of Night in 1966, he portrayed a cab driver.

Macy was the first cast member of the 1969–1972 Off-Broadway triumph Oh! Calcutta! has appeared on stage from 1969 to 1971. He appeared in the 1972 film version of the musical. "The nudity didn't bother" him, despite being fully nude with the rest of the cast. "I'm from Brooklyn."

Macy appeared on the P.D.Q. Bach's Stoned Guest (1970) is a documentary by the author.

Personal life

On the set of Oh!, Macy met Samantha Harper, his future wife.

Macy died on October 17, 2019, at the age of 97; no reason was given.
