James Noble Life

James Wilkes Noble (March 5, 1922 – March 28, 2016) was an American actor best known for his portrayal of sweet-natured, naive Governor Eugene X. Gatling on ABC's 1979-1986 sitcom Benson.

Personal life

Noble was married to actress Carolyn Coates from 1956 to her death in 2005. They had just one child, a daughter.

Noble had lived in Leonia, New Jersey, with his family before relocating to California in 1980.

Life and career

Noble was born in Dallas, Texas, and the son of Lois Frances (née Wilkes) and Ralph Byrne Noble were born. He studied acting and engineering at Southern Methodist University before transferring to serve in the United States Navy during World War II.

Noble, who returned from war, studied under Lee Strasberg and appeared in Broadway theatre, and his television career began with soap operas, including "The Light Turns, The Doctors, and A World Apart. He appeared in Several Films (1979) and Promises in the Dark (1976), Reverend John Witherspoon in the Broadway musical 1776 (1976); Alsobebe (1980); Dr. Bailey in Chances Are (1989). In the 1970s, he was also the spokesperson for Pepto-Bismol in various industries.

In the 1980s sitcom Perfect Strangers (TV series), Noble played Larry Appleton's father. He co-founded Open the Gate Pictures with actor Colleen Murphy in 2005 and directed and starred in the short film Glacier Bay, which received numerous awards at film festivals throughout the United States. In the film Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again (1990), Noble played the live-action version of Archie Comics' Hiram Lodge.
