Bianca Marroqun is a Mexican musical theatre and television actress best known as the first Mexican actress to play Roxie Hart in a Broadway production of Chicago.

Early life and education

Bianca Marroqun was born in Monterrey, Mexico. She grew up in Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico, and spent her childhood between Mexico and Brownsville, Texas. She attended high school at St. Joseph Academy in Brownsville, Texas. She went back to Monterrey, Mexico, to enroll in a science college, where she concentrated on communications.

Career

Bianca Marroqun auditioned and gained a part in the Mexico City production of Beauty and the Beast, so she decided to go to Mexico City and resume her professional theatre training. She appeared in many Broadway musicals, including Rent (1999-2001), The Phantom of the Opera, and Chicago, which earned her an invitation to appear as Roxie Hart, with George Hamilton as Billy Flynn, at the Ambassador Theatre on Broadway. She then returned to Mexico City to close the Chicago season and join The Valiant Monologues Mexican cast.

When she was invited to appear in the United States and Canada tours of Chicago, she left The Vain Monologues. She was the first Mexican woman to be named Outstanding Lead Actress in Washington, D.C., during her tour. Roxie Hart, now at the Ambassador Theatre, returned to Broadway in December 2003 to reprise the tour after his Broadway debut. Marroquin has appeared in the Broadway production of Chicago three times since then, in 2006, 2007, and 2008. And the World Goes Around in October 2007 and Bye Bye Birdie's debut in summer 2008 were two of her latest off-Broadway appearances.

Maria appeared in The Sound of Music's Mexican production as Maria, alongside Lisardo and Olivia Bucio. She returned to work in the Chicago company's national tour after 100 performances. On her Twitter and Facebook pages, she announced that she would be playing Daniela, from June 12 to September 5, 2010.

Mira Quien Baila, the Spanish language version of Dancing with the Stars), saw Marroqun return to television for four years as a judge for Mira Quien Baila (the Spanish language version of Dancing with the Stars). She appeared in Pequenos Gigantes in 2011. Televisa picked her up as the main protagonist of the upcoming Telenovela Esperanza del Corazón. It debuted in Mexico on July 18, 2011. "Esperanza del Corazón" is the author's main theme song in the novella. She also sings the title song to the novela.

In Mexico City, she appeared as Mary Poppins in the first production of the Disney musical in Spanish on November 14, 2012.

Bianca Marroqun is a judge on "Bailando por un Sueo," a reality competition show seen on Univision, and she is a judge. Roxie Hart, the long-running Broadway hit Chicago on March 31, 2014, returned once more to the role of Roxie Hart. Marroqun was named the first-ever National Ambassador for Viva Broadway in the same month. The Broadway League of Producers developed the new audience growth campaign to help bridge Broadway's world to Latino audiences around the country.

Marroqun's first solo album, El Mundo Era Mo (The World Was Mine), was released on May 13, 2014. She co-wrote five of the songs on the 11-track album, which is described as a blend of modern pop with a healthy dose of Latin influence, as well as Spanish and English. Nuestros Tesoros, her second album, three years ago, features of Spanish classic songs.

In Fosse/Verdon, a television show about Bob Fosse and Gwen Verdon's lives, which was released in 2019, Marroqun played Chita Rivera.

Marroqun reopened Chicago on Broadway as the other female lead Velma Kelly after the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown, after playing Roxie Hart for 20 years. During the musical's 25th anniversary celebration performance, Velma Kelly appeared at the Ambassador Theatre on November 16, 2021. The Mr. Amigo 2022 award was presented to her during the evening performance of February 4, 2022 by the Mr. Amigo Association.
