Beverly Sills Life

Beverly Sills (May 25, 1929 – July 2, 2007) was an American operatic soprano whose greatest career occurred in the 1950s and 1970s. Despite singing a repertoire ranging from Handel and Mozart to Puccini, Massenet and Verdi, she is best known for her appearances in coloratura soprano roles in live opera and recordings.

Sills was largely associated with Donizetti's operas, of which she appeared and appeared in numerous roles.

Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, the protagonist in Massenet's La traviata, Laura in Donizetti's The Barber of Seville, Violetta in Verdi's La traviata, and most notably Elisabetta in Roberto Devereux's The Barber of Seville, Dominique de Beaumont's The Barber of Seville, and Marie in Massenet's The Barber of Seville, "In her prime, her technique was exemplary," the New York Times said.

With apparent effortless agility, she could dispatch coloratura roulades and embellishments, capped by stunning high Ds and E-flats.

She performed with scrupulous musicianship, rhythmic incisiveness, and a vivid sense of text." "Capable of spinning a seemingly endless legato line or bursting with crystalline precision into waves of dazzling fiorature and dramatic high notes," NPR reported. She first came from singing in 1980 and became the general manager of the New York City Opera.

She became the chairwoman of Lincoln Center in 1994 and then the Metropolitan Opera's in 2002, stepping down in 2005.

Sills lent her fame to promote her charity work in the prevention and treatment of birth defects.
