Early life, college and amateur career
King was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, on August 13, 1955. In 1973, she graduated from Exeter Township High School. She competed at Furman University and was on the 1976 national championship team, which featured future LPGA players Beth Daniel, Sherri Turner, and Cindy Ferro. At the 1976 U.S. Women's Open, she was a low amateur.
Professional career
In 1977, King began riding the LPGA Tour for the first time. She won her first tournament at the 1984 Women's Kemper Open. She gained three titles in 1984 and then had 21 top-ten finishes to earn LPGA Player of the Year honors. She won 20 LPGA tournaments from 1984 to 1989, more victories than any other golfer in the United States, male or female, during this time period.
King claimed at least twice in the next ten years after winning for the first time in 1984, with a record of six victories in 1989. Every year from 1985 to 1997, she has been in the top ten on the money list, with one year being in the top ten and another in 1997. She has been named Player of the Year three times, gained two scoring titles, and three money awards along the way. She won a scoring title and the money title in 1993, but there was only one tournament. She finished second five times, including at two major championships. She went from 1987 to 1992 and then won her sixth major in 1997. In 2001, she won the last of her 34 LPGA titles. She earned her 30th victory in 1995 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
The Wachovia LPGA Classic, hosted by King, spanned 1996 to 2004. She served for charitable causes, arranged Habitat for Humanity house building projects, and worked in former Soviet bloc countries with orphanage agencies.
