Bert Gould Career

Rugby career

Gould was one of five brothers to play rugby for Newport, including Welsh internationals Arthur and Robert. Bert was the first person to represent Wales himself in the 1892 Home Nations Championship. Gould was selected to participate in the last of the tournament's games against Ireland under his brother Arthur's captaincy. The Welsh team lost the game, but Gould kept his energy for the first game of the next season's Championship. The Welsh selectors had initially selected Conway Rees to play, but Gould was able to return to the squad for the second game of the 1893 Championship, a game away from Scotland. In the country's first away win to Scotland in history, Gould had one of three tries. Wales had to defeat the Irish for the first time in the country's history with the Scottish and English games already secured. Gould won the game at Stradey Park after he scraped the ball in at the corner flag.

Gould had travelled to Barbados to complete civil engineering work by the next season. He then moved to south Africa and performed for both the King William's Town Pirates and the Johannesburg Wanderers.
