Benjamin Hanby Life

Benjamin Russell Hanby (July 22, 1833 – March 16, 1867) was an American composer, educator, and pastor who wrote nearly 80 songs. "Darling Nelly Gray," the Christmas album "Up on the Roof," "Jolly Old Saint Nicholas," and the hymn "Who Is He In Yonder Stall?" are among the most popular. Hanby was born in Rushville, Ohio. * He moved from Westerville, Ohio, at the age of 16, to Otterbein University. * He and his father, Bishop William Hanby, were both passengers on the Underground Railroad. In 1856, Hanby composed "Darling Nelly Gray" in Westerville, which is now a national historical site (moved in the 1930s to 160 West Main Street), right next to Otterbein University's campus. Hanby briefly taught school and then became a minister in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ after graduating in 1858. He became the principal of Seven Mile Academy in Seven Mile, Ohio, in 1860. Hanby, a minister of a New Paris, Ohio, in 1864, was minister of a church in New Paris, Ohio, but by Christmas 1864, he was no longer serving as a pastor, but rather a music academy. * As a Christmas sing-along, he produced "Up On The Housetop." * It was originally named Santa Clause. * George Frederick Root, a Chicago publisher, released "Up On The Rooftop" the following year and relocated Hanby to Chicago to pursue other publishing ventures. Hanby died of tuberculosis in Chicago on March 16, 1867. He is buried in Westerville's Otterbein Cemetery.
