Gareth Neame, the founder of Mayfair's 156-year-old Savile Club, resigned on Friday and renounced his memberships at the Beefsteak Club and the Garrick Club simultaneously. Two sources close to Savile blamed his decision to leave on a variety of clubs' discussions over whether women are eligible to join. According to one of the accounts, Mr Neame simply could not cope with the tests and media involved. Mr Neame denied that the reason for his departure from the clubs was due to the issue of women members.
