ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: Pie-chucking was a feature of vaudeville performances, so it's no surprise that it would be in early cinema. Mr Flip (1909), starring the famous Ben Turpin, was the first living film to feature the stunt. The stunt was certainly shown in two previous films, but they no longer exist. After a husband arrives home late, the 1903 short film Never Interfere In Family Troubles depicts a brawl between family members. The plot synopsis illustrated the point: 'The woman on the other hand of the table stands up, grabs what seems to be a pie, and shoves it in the face of the man.'
