College career
Tate was playing sparingly behind senior Kenny Irons and gained 392 yards on 54 plays in nine games. The Sporting News awarded a Freshman All-America Honorable Mention. Ben's best game was a 156 yard victory over Tulane.
Tate's sophomore season was a good one, leading the Tigers in rushing (903 yards on 202 carries for a 4.5 yard average) and a victory over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
Tate was named to several preseason All-SEC squads heading into his junior year. Tate's numbers have significantly decreased as a result of new offensive coordinator Tony Franklin and his popular pass-first style of offense. He only gained 664 yards on 159 attempts.
Tate shined in his final college season as the feature back in Gus Malzahn's spread offense. He finished with 10,362 yards on 263 attempts. He had a great show against Arkansas, rushing for 184 yards and two touchdowns (over 100 yards in the third quarter). Tate was also named as the Team and Offense MVP award by the AP, as well as being named in the second team All-SEC AW Award. Tate was also a semi-finalist for the Doak Walker Award. In the overtime victory, Tate led Auburn to a victory over Northwestern in the Outback Bowl, rushing for 108 yards and two touchdowns.

Professional career
Tate was selected by the Houston Texans in the 2nd round of the 2010 NFL Draft for the 58th overall pick. The most favored Tate will be chosen somewhere in the second round, and knowing his value at pick 58, the Texans aggressively traded up to draft him. This is the first time in team history that the Texans have drafted a running back earlier than the third round.
Tate was eager to help a Texans running game that had been one of the worst in the league this season, but Tate broke his ankle and was put on injured reserve during the Texas pre-season opener in 2010.
Tate returned to action for the 2011 season, but he was previously ranked fourth on the depth chart behind 2010 NFL rushing champion Arian Foster, Derrick Ward, and Steve Slaton. Tate was the first-day backup to Ward after suffering a hamstring injury to Foster at the end of the preseason. Tate's NFL debut was not disappointing, running for 116 yards and his first NFL touchdown on 24 carries. He continued his good play against the Miami Dolphins over the next week with another 100-yard game, finishing with 103 yards on 23 attempts. He had 942 rushing yards on 175 attempts (third-most in the NFL), with 4 rushing touchdowns and 98 total receiving yards in 15 games played, two of which were on the New Orleans Saints and the Tennessee Titans). Tate ran for 115 yards against the Cleveland Browns in Week 9, while Arian Foster ran for 124 yards in the same game, leading the Texans to 261 yards on the ground, a franchise record.
Tate played in 11 games in the 2012 season, totaling 279 yards on 65 attempts, averaging 4.3 yards per carry. Although his per-carry average remained high, his carry was limited due to a fierce Houston Texans' backfield and lingering injuries to his hamstring and foot. It was a trying season for the young running backs, who were competing with rising running back Justin Forsett for backup duties to Arian Foster.
Tate made 7 appearances with the Texans in 2013, including a season-ending injury to Arian Foster. Tate responded by going for 771 yards and four touchdowns, three of which came in a Week 13 game against the New England Patriots, where he rushed for a season-high 102 yards. Tate was placed on injured reserve on December 19, 2013, capping his season's appearance.
Tate joined the Cleveland Browns on March 15, 2014. In a 29-28 victory over the Tennessee Titans on October 5, 2014, he ran for a career-high 123 yards on 22 carries.
Tate was released by the Browns on November 18, 2014. Tate, Isaiah Crowell, and Terrance West became frustrated with the number of carries he was getting as a result of the Browns' three-back rotation system, which made it difficult for him to practice again.
Following Tate's release from Cleveland, the Minnesota Vikings were given a waiver. However, the Vikings cut Tate after only three games with the team, totaling 38 rushing yards off of 13 attempts.
The Pittsburgh Steelers lost their quarterback in the lead up to the 2014 NFL playoffs due to injuries. They were rushed to sign Tate's newly released Tate on December 30, 2014, but they had no experience running backs. Tate had five carries for 19 yards in the Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
In 2017, Tate appeared in The Spring League for the first time.
In preseason, he was put on IR. www.edu.com
