Ben Stevenson Career

Career

Stevenson was invited to perform the Wells Royal Ballet by Dame Ninette de Valois at the age of 18. Anton Dolin invited him to dance with the London Festival Ballet, where he performed leading roles in all the classics.

He started choreographing Cinderella for the National Ballet of Washington, D.C., in 1970 and was co-director with Frederic Franklin. In honor of the inaugural season of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, he produced a new version of The Sleeping Beauty in the same year.

Stevenson was named artistic director of the Houston Ballet after a brief association with Ruth Page's Chicago Ballet in 1976, which has since expanded to one of America's top ballet companies. During his tenure as a choreographer, he expanded the company's repertory by acquiring the works of the world's most respected choreographers, commissioning new works, staging the classics, and choreographing original works.

During this period as the artistic director of America's fifth-largest ballet company and when Barbara Bush was a trustee of the company, Stevenson visited Beijing and gave the Chinese dancer Li Cunxin a six-week scholarship to America and then a position with the company. After 27 years with the Houston Ballet, Cunxin returned to dance at the gala at Stevenson's retirement.

He was named Director Emeritus of Houston Ballet in 2003, and the organization's academy was renamed the Ben Stevenson Academy.

Stevenson was named Artistic Director of the Texas Ballet Theater in Fort Worth in 2004.

Stevenson has received numerous awards for his choreography, including three gold medals at the Varna International Ballet Competitions in 1972, 1982, and 1986. In addition,, he has arranged ballets for the Harkness Ballet, English National Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, the Paris Opera Ballet, La Scala in Milan, the Munich State Opera Ballet, Ballet de Santiago, The Perm State P.I. Tchaikovsky Opera and Ballet Theatre, and several companies in the United States.

Stevenson was portrayed by Bruce Greenwood in Bruce Beresford's Last Dancer, 2009.

Despite a scare from League One's bottom team, Lukas Jutkiewicz and Kevin Long sent Birmingham's Championship team through. Rovers were up front after a Ben Stevenson stunner after seven minutes, but the Blues came back to advance to the fourth round. When a short-corner routine was delivered expertly to Stevenson, Forest Green's early pressure was rewarded, as he planted a fine curling effort into the top corner from 25 yards.
