Ben Gordon Career

College career

Despite being off the bench for the majority of the season, Gordon ranked second on the team in scoring (12.6 ppg). In the Big East tournament, he made the game-winning 3-point shot against Villanova. Gordon, a sophomore, averaged 19.5 points (which ranked 50th in the country), and the Huskies received 156 total assists, earning Gordon Second Team All-Big East accolades.

Gordon averaged 20.5 points in his junior and senior years at UConn (again ranked 50th in the country), 4.7 rebounds, and 4.5 assists. He also scored on 104 three-pointers, the second-highest single-season total in UConn history. Gordon set a new Big East Tournament record with 81 points, winning the tournament's Most Outstanding Performer award. Gordon was also named in the NCAA tournament as the Most Outstanding Player award. With 127 points, he also helped lead the Huskies to the NCAA Championship. Following his junior year, Gordon declared himself eligible for the 2004 NBA draft and was selected third overall by the Chicago Bulls, one pick after the Charlotte Bobcats drafted Emeka Okafor, his UConn teammate.

Professional career

Gordon predicted that he'd be anywhere from 7th to 12th in the NBA draft, but as the draft got closer, he thought the Bulls might draft him third, as they did with Michael Jordan 20 years ago in the 1984 NBA draft. "I'm a guy who thinks about the numbers a lot." I had no idea I'd be the third drafter before the draft. I thought I was going to be anywhere from 7th to 12th. I started to get a sense that the Bulls might be a team I could play for as we got closer, and I began to get a hint that they might be a team that I might end up playing for. Michael Jordan was drafted by the Bulls and was drafted as the third pick, just like you." Gordon wore the number 4 on his jersey in high school and college, but the Bulls had to wear the number 7 to the number 4's. "I wore No." Gordon said. I'd say 4 years, but Jerry Sloan had that number before so there wasn't much I could do about it. So I was just [put together] being the third pick with my old No. 3 bkw. 4. That's why I wear No. "7" is the most notable of the seven." In the same draft, the Bulls also acquired Luol Deng.

The Bulls did not win more than 30 games in a single season between Michael Jordan's deposition in 1998 and Gordon's arrival in 2004. Gordon helped lead a turnaround from a 3–14 start to a 49-35 finish, securing the fourth seed in the playoffs in his rookie year. When playing 24.2 minutes per game, he averaged 15.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. Gordon also had 21 double-digit fourth-quarter-point games, second to only LeBron James' 22 in the NBA. The Bulls (without Luol Deng) lost in six games to the Washington Wizards in their first playoff appearance in the post-Jordan period. Gordon was the first rookie to be honoured with the NBA Sixth Man Award following the season. Gordon was also named on the NBA Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month three times (January to March) and was also selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Gordon had trouble with turnovers (4.46 percent 48 minutes, fourth in the league in 2004–05), but there was also a lack of stamina in his rookie season. "More than anything, I just want to come back [in the fall] in a better shape," He said. A lot of this game is about fitness and how long you can put on your best performance." Gordon also revealed that he was designing BG7, an allusion to his initials and jersey number. Gordon unveiled the drink at One Sixty Blue, a restaurant co-owned by Michael Jordan. The beverage was made using white tea, which contains a high amount of antioxidants, as well as the most polyphenols of any tea.

Gordon alternated between the starting lineup and bench for the Bulls, starting 47 games (mostly in the second half of the season), while coming off the bench for 35 games. Gordon's minutes per game increased, as did his scoring and assist averages. Gordon was chosen to participate in the Rookie Challenge, which included 17 points for the Sophomores.

Gordon tied for the most three-pointers made in a game with nine points on April 14, 2006, beating the Washington Wizards. The Bulls returned to the playoffs, but they were also disqualified in the first round in six games; this time they lost to the Miami Heat, who went on to win the NBA Championship.

Gordon's third season was a big step forward for him and the Bulls. He adapted to become the team's starting shooting guard, scoring 21.4 points on nearly 40% shooting in 33 minutes per game. Chicago improved from a 3-9 start to a 49-33 finish. Gordon made a career-high 48 points on March 4, 2007, leading to a thrilling comeback victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in overtime. The Bulls lost the first round of the playoffs for the second time in NBA history, beating the defending champions in the first round. In the second round, they lost to the Detroit Pistons in the second round, but they were able to salvage the series to six games after falling behind 3–0.

The Bulls started the 2007–08 season with high hopes after their first playoff series victory in almost a decade. Gordon and Deng turned down offers for contract extension prior to the season, afraid they would make more money in a free agency. Scott Skiles was suspended after a 9–16 start, and the Bulls did not recover. With their first overall pick in 2008, the Bulls drafted Derrick Rose, prompting concerns about whether Gordon and Rose will coexist in Chicago's backcourt (both were score-first guards).

Gordon accepted a one-year qualifying offer of $6.4 million on October 1, 2008, after being unable to secure the position he was waiting for. Gordon passed Scottie Pippen as the Chicago Bulls' career leader in three-pointers made on December 27, 2008. The Bulls' season got off to a rocky start as had been the case in previous four seasons. Gordon and Rose developed chemistry while playing together, and the Bulls were able to finish the season on a 15-08 record and just barely qualify for the playoffs at 41-41.

The Bulls are expected to be swept in the playoffs as the seventh seed and matched with the defending champion Boston Celtics. The Bulls lost five games in a series that featured Gordon's scoring exploits (42 points in game 2) and Ray Allen (51 points in game 6), seven overtime periods, and five games decided by a single basket before losing. Gordon led the Bulls in scoring for the season and playoffs, averaging 20.7 and 24.3 points.

Gordon committed to a five-year contract with the Detroit Pistons worth between $55 million and $60 million in July 2009. Gordon continued to play as a sixth man off the bench with the Pistons. Gordon scored his 10th point in NBA history on January 9, 2010. Gordon underwent surgery on his left ankle early in the season.

Gordon tied for the most three-point shots made without a miss on March 22, 2012. He scored 45 points to help Detroit bounce back from a 25-point deficit, but the Nuggets lost 116–115 to the Denver Nuggets.

Gordon and a potential first-round pick were traded to the Charlotte Bobcats on June 26, 2012, bringing Corey Maggette and the Pistons together.

Gordon scored 20 points in the fourth quarter of an eventual 91–94 loss to the Atlanta Hawks on November 28, 2012. The 20 points were the most in a quarter for any Bobcats player. He finished with 26 points on 7-of-11 shooting, shooting 7-of-10 from outside the arc to go with 5 free throw attempts and makes.

The Bobcats waived him on March 2, 2014.

Gordon signed a two-year, $9 million contract with the Orlando Magic on July 11, 2014. The Magic suspended him on June 29, 2015, a birthday presenter.

Gordon signed with the Golden State Warriors on September 28, 2015. However, he was suspended after playing in two preseason games on October 14, 2015.

Gordon was purchased by the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League on January 24, 2017.

National team career

Gordon was named on the shortlist for the British national basketball team on April 1, 2008. Gordon is eligible for the team due to his British birth and dual citizenship. In 2010, he said he wanted to represent Great Britain in the 2012 Olympics. However, Gordon did not attend the opening of Great Britain's pre-Olympic training camp in Houston, Texas, in June 2012. He later said he could not commit to the team after being moved from Detroit to Charlotte.

Gordon was announced on July 22, 2016 that he would be selected for the EuroBasket 2017 qualifiers. Gordon made the UK's 12-man roster for the EuroBasket 2017 qualifiers, and he averaged 9.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game during the qualification games.

Gordon competed for the United States national team at the 2003 Pan American Games.

Post-playing career

He was arrested on June 1, 2017, for releasing fire alarms at his Los Angeles apartment building.

After an altercation with a female patron at a holistic wellness center in Mount Vernon, New York, Gordon was hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation in October.

On November 20, 2017, he was arrested in Manhattan for punching the property's chief, pulling a knife on him, and robbing him of his security deposit. He was ticketed, released on $50,000 bail, and he is set to appear in court.

In an article about mental stability for The Players' Tribune in February 2020, Gordon confessed to bipolar disorder and lengthy battles with mental illness since retirement, which included a suicide attempt.

Gordon was arrested in 2022 for reportedly punching his son at LaGuardia Airport in New York and then refusing to arrest. Since 2018, Gordon's son had a court order of protection prohibiting his father from entering Illinois or "committing physical assault, trembling, or interference with personal rights."
