Personal life
Carroll married jazz bassist Joe Shulman, a member of the trio, in September 1954. In 1957, he died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 33. Bert later married agent and photographer Bert Block, with whom she had a daughter, Suzanne Block Glatt, who died of emphysema in 1986. Carroll married advertising executive Mark Stroock in 2011, a union that lasted until her death at the age of 92.
Early life and career
Carroll was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. She began classical piano lessons at age eight, but by high school, she wanted to become a jazz pianist. She attended the New England Conservatory of Music for a year, but decided against it because it was too late for bands to play. Leonard Feather dubbed her "the first girl ever to play bebop piano" in 1947. In the ensuing year, her trio, which featured Chuck Wayne on guitar and Clyde Lombardi on bass, spent a short time with Benny Goodman. Later, Charlie Byrd returned Wayne and Joe Shulman replaced Lombardi. Carroll decided to make it a drums, bass, and piano trio following Byrd's departure.
Carroll and her companions appeared on Me and Juliet by Rodgers and Hammerstein in the 1950s. Due to shifting musical tastes and personal concerns, her career slowed over the decade.
Later career
Due to a renewed enthusiasm for her work, she revived her career in 1972. Rita Coolidge had her called by Rita Coolidge to assist A&M in 1975. She appeared with Coolidge and Kris Kristofferson in 1978. She became well-known as a cabaret performer in the ensuing two decades.
