News about Bamber Gascoigne

Amol Rajan, the university challenge's host, has been described as "the best EVER" by fans who claim to have been watching the BBC2 quiz "for decades."

Since taking over University Challenge viewers from fan favorite Jeremy Paxman in July last year, the former BBC Media Editor had his work cut out winning over University Challenge viewers. However, in recent weeks, the 40-year-old has received a slew of praise, with some commenting that he's a better host than Jeremy Paxman and Bamber Gascoigne. After 28 years as quizmaster, Jeremy Paxman will address his final University Challenge on Saturday

Jeremy Paxman (left, seen in the 90s) will present his final edition of University Challenge, ending his tenure as Britain's longest-serving quizmaster. The veteran broadcaster (right, pictured last month) who has hosted the show since it was revived by the BBC in 1994, has announced that he would no longer be presenter a year after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Since Bamber Gascoigne first introduced the quiz in 1962, journalist and broadcaster Amol Rajan (inset) will now take the reins, becoming the third host of the program in the program's 60-year history. The last time Mr Paxman's show, which pits students in four teams against rival universities and colleges, will air at 8.30 p.m. on Sunday.

The first look at Amol Rajan and the new University Challenge titles is provided by BBC

As recording begins for the popular quiz show's 61st year, the BBC revealed a first glance at new University Challenge host Amol Rajan and a redesigned set. Following his diagnosis with Parkinson's, the Radio 4 actor will take over from Jeremy Paxman, who announced last August that he was ending his 28-year tenure on the program. Rajan, 39, will be the third person to host the University Challenge in the BBC Two show's history, having been established by Bamber Gascoigne in 1962. The broadcaster has updated the program, replacing a previous version that saw 1,736 contestants compete in 2013. In addition, the designers have crafted a new title sequence, which will be seen when the new series debuts this summer.

The University Challenge on the BBC has been accused of treating non-Oxbridge universities as a'second class.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, March 27, 2023
The show's rules encourage separate colleges from Oxford and Cambridge to enroll, while limiting all other universities to one team each. With eight of its 28 teams from Oxford or Cambridge colleges, the quiz show is in its 52nd season. Nine of the 28 entrants came from Oxbridge, nine of whom were from Oxbridge. Frank Coffield, emeritus professor of education at University College London, said the show's 'grotesque' Oxbridge bias violates the corporation's impartiality laws and perpetuates bigotry in the United Kingdom in a series of lawsuits to the BBC. Prof. Coffield, a visiting professor at Sunderland, wrote a letter: The president of the 70-plus Oxbridge colleges (even those with only 300/400 students), is eligible to participate in University Challenge, but major academic universities such as Manchester and Birmingham (with upwards of 40,000 students) are only allowed one entry per student.' What justification has the BBC for rigging the programme in this way?' In another, he said that the program's structure makes non-Oxbridge institutions treated as a "second class."

Get your thinking caps on! CLIVE MYRIE, your mastermind, puts your knowledge of everything 2022

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 30, 2022
MYRIE, a LAND of quizzers, is a country of quizzers. However, you may be surprised to learn that the first recorded appearance of the word 'quiz' is remarkably recent, when it was used in 1782 to describe an odd-looking person. If the Romans or Aboriginal peoples were asked to leave any information, they didn't leave any evidence. This quiz, dear reader, is about everything 2022. So wind back the mental cogs over the past 12 months and get your thinking caps on! Good luck. Is it possible to upload files? .

Amol Rajan, the new host of the University Challenge, is causing outcry

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 20, 2022
Colleagues at the London-based broadcaster have been left "seething" after the Today show host's appointment as Jeremy Paxman's replacement because he "gets every gig going." And even though two female presenters were told they would get a screen test before the BBC backtracked on this offer, Rajan, 39, pictured, was given the job on yesterday. The broadcaster has chosen another male host for the UK's longest-running quiz on television, causing some fear that the broadcaster has chosen another male host. Prior to Paxman, Bamber Gascoigne was the only other person to have opened the show.

Amol Rajan revealed as next University Challenge host

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 18, 2022
The new role is a major increase for the BBC rising star, who replaces Paxman after he stepped down as host of the TV quiz show for the first time on UK television after 28 years. Since December 2016, the 39-year-old has been the BBC's media editor and a host on BBC Radio 4's Today programme since May 2021. He has appeared on BBC Radio 2 and The One Show as well. During his tenure at the corporation, Rajan, who has openly discussed his republican views, has been involved in a variety of scandals. Last year, he sparked outrage from the Royal Family over a film about Prince William and Harry's friendship with the media, which was chastised as inaccurate. In the meantime, Novak Djokovic's 'world exclusive' interview with him earlier this year was criticized for broadcasting the Serbian ace's anti-vax views.

PETER HITCHENS: Now that my old foe Paxman is leaving, it's time to scrap University Challenge

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2022
PETER HITCHENS: The time has come to put an end to the University Challenge. It is impossible to recover after Jeremy Paxman's departure (left) — we can't. In fact, he has been the only positive thing in it for some time. Despite his gruesome appearance, I suspect that a true measure of the show's audience would reveal a long, slow decline. I must declare an interest here. Mr Paxman and I (pictured, right) are old rivals, particularly because I (tired of his snails in his Newsnight days) subjected him to a slew of startling questions about the Middle East's past over lunch. I will not reveal his results. Mind you, I doubt anyone else on the BBC would have answered those questions, but in that case, they certainly shouldn't have to be so hoity-to-charade on the subject.

Could Amol Rajan be the next University Challenge host?BBC's media editor tipped to succeed Paxman

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 17, 2022
After almost three decades, the BBC Radio 4 Today host (pictured left), 38, is considered the most popular candidate to replace the show's stalwart host. Paxman's (pictured right) departure from the famous quiz show comes a year after the tough-talking journalist, 72, announced that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Fiona Bruce, the bookie's favorite, and Betfair priced her at 2/1 yesterday, on Antiques Roadshow and Question Time host Fiona Bruce (pictured below). Richard Osman (pictured top image), who resigned from BBC quiz show Pointless after 13 years to concentrate on writing fiction, appeared alongside Mastermind host Clive Myrie and physicist and host Brian Cox earlier this year. Boris Johnson, the outgoing Prime Minister who will be leaving Downing Street later this year, was also listed as an outsider on the list as a long shot for Classics due to his appearance on the show and a passion for Classics. According to The Telegraph, Rajan is now considered to be the front runner in the role. Rajan has been front and center of some of the broadcaster's most popular - and most controversial - documentaries and interviews in recent years. Rajan, who has often written openly about his republican views, sparked skepticism from the Royal Family over a documentary about Prince William and Harry's relationship with the media.

So who will be the next University Challenge host?

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 16, 2022
Fiona Bruce and comedian Sandi Toksvig are joint favourites on 2/1, followed by former Pointless host Richard Osman on 3/1, with the BBC likely to announce his replacement later this week. Victoria Coren-Mitchell (7/2), newsman Clive Myrie (5/1), and academic turned documentary presenter Professor Brian Cox (6/1) are among the other notable candidates.
