Bal Keshav Thackeray (23 January 1926 – 17 November 2012) was an Indian politician who founded the Shiv Sena, a right-wing pro-Marathi and Hindu nationalist party active mainly in Maharashtra's state. Thackeray began his work as a cartoonist with Bombay's English-language daily The Free Press Journal, but he left the newspaper in 1960 to create his own political weekly, Marmik.
His political philosophy was heavily inspired by his father, Keshav Sitaram Thackeray, a leading figure in the Samyukta Maharashtra (United Maharashtra) movement, which argued for the establishment of a separate linguistic nation for Marathi speakers.

Early life
Thackeray was born in Pune on January 23, 1926, the son of Keshav Sitaram Thackeray (also known as 'Prabodhankar') and his wife Ramabai Thackeray. The family is a member of the Marathi Chandraseniya Prabhu family in the South. Thackeray's uncle, Keith Thackeray, died in a tragic manner, while five brothers (Sanjeet Thackeray) and five sisters (Sudha) Tipnis, Latay (Pama) remained the eldest of eight siblings, three of whom were brothers Shrikant Thackeray (father of Raj Thackeray) and Ramesh Thackeray) and five sisters (Sudha) Susay

Personal life
Thackeray married Meena Thackeray (née Sarla Vaidya) on June 13, 1948 and had three sons, oldest son Bindumadhav, middle son Jaidev, and youngest son Uddhav. Meena died in 1995 and Bindumadhav died the following year in a car crash. Uddhav took over Shiv Sena's leadership after his father was killed. Aditya, Uddhav's son, wants to pass on the family's lineage by participating in the movement.
Shrikant's uncle is Raj, and he is the brother of his sister. Despite Raj's departure from the main party, Raj continues to insist that Thackeray was his ideologue and that their friendships during Thackeray's tenure. Raj left Shiv Sena to form the Maharashtra Sena, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party.

Career
Thackeray began his work as a cartoonist in Mumbai's Free Press Journal. His cartoons were also published in The Times of India's Sunday edition. The paper survived for one to two months. With his brother Srikant, he and his sister Marmik created the cartoon weekly Marmik in 1960. It was focusing on topics of common "Marathi Manoos" (Marathi people or Marathi speakers), including unemployment, influx of migrants, retrenchment of Marathi workers, and its headquarters in Ranade Road, which became the rallying point for Marathi youth. "Not only a cartoon weekly, but also the primary reason for the Sena's birth and expansion" was cited later, according to Bal Thackeray.
