Azarias Ruberwa Manywa (born August 20, 1964) is a Congolese politician, advocate, and public figure.
He was a founder of the Rassemblement Congolais pour la Démocratie (RCD-G) rebel faction during the Second Congo War.
He was one of the vice presidents of the Democratic Republic of Congo's transitional government from 2003 to 2006.
Since 2003, he has served as the leader and president of RCD-G's national party.
He is a member of the Banyamulenge people of South Kivu who belong to the Tutsi tribe.
Early life and education
Ruberwa was born in Rugezi, a village in the South Kivu province's highland area. He is a member of the Banyamulenge people, who are a member of the Tutsi tribe. The Congo's Tutsis make up a tiny minority.
Ruberwa spent his youth in Minembwe, South Kivu, before heading to Katanga Province to finish high school and college. He earned his LLB (Legion Law), specialising in economics and social law, and finished with the highest distinction at the University of Lubumbashi. He passed the Zaire national bar exam after graduating and was eligible to practice in August 1990. Ruberwa formed "Cabinet Azarias Ruberwa Manywa" after three years of serving with a Lubumbashi law firm. He practiced medicine in Lubumbashi before the war began in 1996.
Post-Government career (2006-2016)
Ruberwa, who lost in a packed field to incumbent President Joseph Kabila in 2006, has stepped away from politics and resumed his law practice in Lubumbashi, as well as two additional offices in Kinshasa and Goma. The company specializes in corporate restructuring, white collar, international arbitration, and lobbying. The firm's clients include financial, mining, telecommunications, multinational growth, and non-profit groups.
Ruberwa served on the board of Mercy Ships from 2010 to 2019. He continues to serve on several other boards, including The International Leadership Foundation, Congo Family Recovery, The Congolese National Prayer Breakfast Group, and a few other groups.
