Aviva Chiara Mongillo (born February 6, 1998), also known as Carys, is a Canadian actress and singer.
She is best known for her appearances in The Family Channel's Backstage and Juniper in the CBC sitcom Workin' Moms.
Early life
Aviva Chiara Mongillo was born in Markham, Canada, on February 6, 1998. She was born into an Italian family and said she was "always supported" her aspirations. She was enrolled in acting lessons, vocal lessons, and guitar lessons at the age of seven. She attended Unionville High School and continued her training when appearing on Backstage. Mongillo has suffered from anxiety from an early age.
Career
Mongillo performed a number of original songs on SoundCloud while attending Unionville High School. They were attracted by a Toronto music producer who invited her to a recording studio. She spent time with the songwriters, and they told her that Backstage was being produced for her. They advised her that she should apply for a role in the series, and she was cast as Alya Kendrick. She portrayed the role for sixty episodes. "Hype" was Mongillo's debut single in June 2016. The single was accompanied by a music video. Songs About Boys, her debut EP, was released on September 15, 2017. The EP was promoted by Family Channel, Backstage's website, and the EP was featured on Family Channel. In 2017, she appeared in Don't Talk to Irene, a Canadian comedy film.
Mongillo began portraying Juniper in the CBC sitcom Workin' Moms in 2018. In 2019, she appeared in the film Long Shot, a teen representation of Charlize Theron's character, as well as acting in the slasher film Random Acts of Violence. Carys began performing under the stage name Carys in 2019, and the single "Bad Boy" was announced on July 26, 2019. Since going viral on social media website TikTok, the Songs About Boys EP's "Princesses Don't Cry" became a sleeper hit in August. Using the song, which was later released as a single under her stage name, over 850,000 videos were made. When the album first gained traction, she was perplexed because she wanted Carys to be a character she could feel "removed from" and did not want to be seen as vulnerable. She was then grateful for the opportunity to be vulnerable with her music. On November 12, 2019, the music video for "Princess Don't Cry" was released. "No More" was her next single in June 2020, as well as a music video. On August 28, 2020, she announced the single "Crush" and announced that her debut EP as Carys, To Everyone Like Me, would be published on October 2, 2020. The song "When a Girl" was released as a single on the occasion of To Anyone Like Me's debut, as well as a accompanying music video.
