Musical career
After their original drummer Sean Johnson had left San Diego, Willard joined the Crypt in 1990. Willard recalled the experience in a 2006 interview: Willard recalled it:
Willard performed on Rocket from the Crypt's second album Circa: Now! (1992) and subsequent albums Hot Charity (1995), Scream, Dracula, Scream! (1995), and the RFTC (1998), as well as numerous EPs and singles, are among the many EPs and singles that have been released. He toured the United States and Europe during his time with the band. Willard recalls several of his travel experiences with the company, including tours in a box truck and a airport shuttle, which were all at his request. However, he left the company in 2000 due to differences with the other members over the band's direction:
Willard was recalled in Rocket from the Crypt's lineup by Mario Rubalcaba.
He returned to Rocket From the Crypt in October 2011 to perform "He's a Chef" on the children's television show Yo Gabba. He appeared in three shows with the band at Riot Fest in September 2013. He appeared with the band at the Fun Fun Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin, Texas, in November 2014.
Willard, who graduated from the Crypt, spent time as a drum technician for Weezer. He appeared on Alkaline Trio's "Private Eye" as a touring drummer in 2000 and appeared in their music video. He soon joined Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson in his Side Project The Particular Goodness, in which Willard performed and played guitar while Wilson performed. Willard appeared in Moth's 2002 tour support for their third album Provisions, Fiction, and Gear, as well as appearing in their music video for "I See Sound." The Land Air Sea, Willard's first recorded performance with The Special Goodness, was in 2003. The band hasn't released an album since 2005, but they revealed in November 2007 that they'll be recording new material for a forthcoming album. On Melissa Auf der Maur's debut solo album Auf der Maur (2004), Willard also recorded drum tracks for the songs "Head Unbound" and "Would If I Could" on his album "Would If I Could."
Willard joined The Offspring in 2003, replacing long-time drummer Ron Welty, who had left the band earlier this year. Willard's time with the company included numerous tours, but no one performed on any officially released studio recordings. After Welty left the band, professional drummer Josh Freese had recorded the drum tracks for the band's 2003 album Splinter. Willard appeared with them in the single "Can't Get My") Head Around You" shortly after the album's debut and appeared in their music video. However, he became a founding member of Angels & Airwaves in 2005 (see below), and his loyalty to the new organization began to lure him away from The Offspring. In 2005, the Offspring released a Best Hits collection, which included two new songs, "Can't Repeat" and a preview of The Police's "Next to You," although Willard appeared with the band in the "Can't Repeat" music video. In July 2007, it was announced that he had left The Offspring to concentrate on Angels & Airwaves. Before it was confirmed that Willard's permanent replacement would be former Face to Face drummer Pete Parada, Freese performed drum tracks for The Offspring for Rise and Fall, Rage, and Grace (2008). Later, offspring singer Dexter Holland expressed surprise: "Itter Holland" (additional) was the subject of a remark:
Willard joined Tom DeLonge in his current company Angels & Airwaves, despite the fact that The Offspring took a "touring hiatus" in 2006. In a Shave Magazine interview, he said that the band's collective knowledge made joining really simple for him. "No one is trying to figure out what is and what isn't going to work, not just for themselves, but also for musicians and for a band, what life will be like on the road, and all that sort of stuff." Everybody had enough experience to sit down and do the work. It's definitely made it simpler than anything else." Willard "has always seemed to me like the single highest score in music," DeLonge said. He is a loyal, honest, and humble companion, but he is also a great showman." Former Box Car Racer/Hazen Street guitarist David Kennedy and former Distillers bassist Ryan Sinn released their debut album We Don't Need to Whisper in May 2006. It reached #4 on the Billboard 200,spawning numerous chart-to-diets, "It Hurts," "Do It For Me Now," and "The War," among other things. Willard toured extensively with the group in support of the album. Willard revealed in July 2007 that he would no longer be involved in the making of the band's second album I-Empire to concentrate on his work with Angels & Airwaves. The album was released in November 2007 and has gone on to sell over 200,000 copies in the United States. "Everything's Magic," "Secret Crowds," and "Breathe" were among the I-Empire singles. Love, Angels & Airwaves' third album, was also released in February 2010. Willard performed with Angels & Airwaves in May and July to promote the album. Willard officially announced his retirement from Angels & Airwaves on October 4, 2011. The split is said to have been "amicable" with the rest of the band. Willard had completed recording all drum tracks for the group's fourth studio album Love: Part Two, which was released on November 11, 2011.
Willard replaced Charlie Quintana in Social Distortion in April 2009. With Social Distortion in 2009, he toured Europe and the United States and was supposed to tour South America with them in April 2010, and they had just released their seventh studio album. Willard announced on March 8, 2010 that he was no longer in Social Distortion due to scheduling conflicts with Angels & Airwaves. Fu Manchu drummer Scott Reeder had him on to his South American tour.
Willard joined Matt Skiba of Alkaline Trio in February 2011 for a side venture called theHELL. Sauves les Requines, the band's debut EP, was released in January 2012.
In June 2011, he became the permanent drummer for Can's group Danko Jones. He is no longer in Danko Jones as of July 2013.
