Arthur Kane Life

Arthur Harold Kane Jr. (February 3, 1949-2004), a bass guitarist for the pioneering glam rock band the New York Dolls, was best known as the bass guitarist.

Kane was a founding member of the Dolls in 1971 and remained an integral part of the band until being banned out in 1975, shortly after the departure of Johnny Thunders and Jerry Nolan.

Kane revived the Dolls (Johansen and Sylvain Sylvain) who were victims of the 2005 documentary New York Doll in London, despite decades of alienation from Dolls singer David Johansen's, to rehearse and perform a reunion concert.

Kane's nickname, Arthur "Killer" Kane, was inspired by the first article published about the Dolls, in which the journalist referred to Kane's "killer bass playing" in addition to his bass playing.

Kane also said that it was inspired by the 1930s science fiction hero Buck Rogers, a villainous character named Killer Kane.

Early life

Kane was born in The Bronx, New York City, and Erna and Harold Kane's only child. His mother's ancestors immigrated from Sweden. Arthur was close to his mother and aunt, Millie, who used to listen to Elvis music. "Record" was the first word he learned as a youth. Arthur was seventeen when his mother died of cancer (leukemia). Arthur left home for good after his father became an addict. He graduated from Martin Van Buren High School in Queens. He first performed bass in the band Actress alongside several original New York Dolls: Johnny Thunders, Rick Rivets, and Billy Murcia.

Kane is a Food Science and Management undergraduate at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Kane met with art students such as Eric Marshall in the Pratt dormitory on Willoughby Avenue during his youth. (Marshall was later recruited on saxophone for fellow Doll Sylvain's short-lived Criminals later in life) Kane was always interested in music. He had stopped attending classes by his third year at Pratt, was sharing an apartment with Dave Trott, and wanted to start a band. He inherited money at twenty-one and moved to Amsterdam in the hopes of finding like-minded musicians.
