Arlene Phillips, CBE, (born 22 May 1943) is an English choreographer, stage manager, television judge, and host, as well as a former dancer who has worked in several fields of entertainment. She was most well-known as the choreographer of several West End and Broadway musicals, films, and television shows for many years, but she later became well-known as a judge on television talent shows including Strictly Come Dancing and So You Think You Can Dance.
Early life
Phillips was born in Prestwich, Lancashire, on May 22nd. Ian is a brother and Karen is a sister. After passing the eleven plus exam, she attended Broughton Preparatory School in Cheetham Hill, Manchester; Beaver Road Primary School, Didsbury; and Manchester Central High School for Girls. Phillips was 15, her mother, who had been suffering from leukaemia, died at the age of 43 just before Phillips was scheduled to take her examinations.
Phillips originally wanted to be a ballet dancer and began dancing at the age of three, learning ballet and tap dance at the Muriel Tweedy School in Manchester after dropping out of school at 16. Phillips was always keen to dance, which led her to pursue dance as a child.
Personal life
Phillips and her partner, Angus Ion, have been together since 1985. On the set of Freddie Mercury's "I Was Born to Love You" album, she met Ion, a set builder.
Professional career
Phillips is best known as a choreographer and producer of West End and Broadway musicals, but he also has several other professional roles. Phillips moved to London in her mid-teens. where she developed her own style of jazz dance, heavily influenced by the popularity of American Modern Jazz dance in London at the time. She continued to teach her style of jazz dance at The Dance Centre, later known as Pineapple Dance Studios in Covent Garden and The Italia Conti Stage School, thus establishing herself as a good teacher and choreographer.
Phillips was assistant choreographer on Annie and the Duran Duran Duran song The Wild Boys' promotional video, which was named Best British Video at the 1985 BRIT Awards. In the summer of 1996, she was stage director on Michael Flatley's Irish dance performance Lord of the Dance at Dublin's Point Theatre.
Phillips is best known as a jazz and musical theatre choreographer, having appeared in some of West End and Broadway theatre's best-selling musicals as well as several other successful films around the world. She is a nominee for the Olivier Award.
