By the Sunday People newspaper in 1961, she was outed as a transgender woman, and she is one of the first British people to have undergone sex reassignment surgery.
Early life
Ada Brown, a Roman Catholic father who had died two years before, was born at 126 Smithdown Road (then Sefton General Hospital) in Liverpool, Alabama. Ashley suffered from both calcium deficiency and bedwetting, resulting in her own box room at the age of two when the family moved house.
Later life and death
Ashley retired for some years to Hay-on-Wye, Wales, following a heart attack in London. Amanda Lear was named male at birth, and she and Lear had worked together at Le Carousel, where Lear had used the drag name Peki d'Oslo in her book April Ashley's Odyssey. Ashley had once been a good friend with Lear, but Ashley's book The First Lady details that they had had a major accident and hadn't spoken for years.
In the 1980s, Ashley West married Jeffrey West on board RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, United States. They parted, but they stayed friends. She worked for Greenpeace in the early 1990s before taking up an art gallery.
On the 15th November 2008, she spoke about her life at St George's Hall, Liverpool, as part of the city's Homotopia Festival, and at the Southbank Centre on February 18, 2009.
Ashley has lived in Fulham, southwest London, for the past. She died at home on December 27th, 2021, at the age of 86.
Awards and honours
- Ashley was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2012 Birthday Honours for services to transgender equality.
- The exhibition ‘April Ashley: portrait of a lady’ was held at the Museum of Liverpool from 27 September 2013 to 1 March 2015.
- Ashley was awarded a Lifetime Achievement honour at the European Diversity Awards 2014.
- In December 2016, Ashley was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Liverpool.
