António Maria da Silva (August 15, 1886 – March 3, 1971) was a Portuguese actor.

Over his more than 40 appearances in theater over his more than 40 years of experience.

Early life

António Silva was born to a humble family, one of many sons and daughters of Francisco Constantino Augusto da Silva (1849, Lisbon, Socorro), a frame gilder who married Amélia das Dores (July 4, 1936, Lisbon, Portugal, Socorro). The family lived in Rua do Jasmim nr. 5.

António was an assistant, a cashier, and a fireman, where he rose to the rank of commander before becoming an actor.

Career

He studied finance and performed in a number of amateur theatre companies. In 1910, his first appearance as an actor was in Tolstoy's "The New Christ," which the Alves da Silva company produced at the Teatro dos Condes. He was a hit in other small roles in plays such as "O Conde de Monte Cristo" or "O Rei Maldito."

He worked with the António de Sousa group in Brazil, where he appeared in Brazilian silent films such as Convém Martelar and Coraço de Gacho in 1920, and in the same year, he married Josefina Barco.

He worked at the Satanella Amarante company for several years, focusing on theatre performances and reviews on his return to Portugal. After working with many other theatre companies (Lopo Lauer, António de Macedo, Comediantes de Lisboa, Vasco Morgado) he finally entered Portuguese cinema, by joining the cast of A Canç'o de Lisboa by Cottinelli Telmo in 1933. That was the case with films, that his fame and ingenuity as an actor had been firmly established. Camo (1947), O Leo da Ventrela (1948), and Fado (1948). He appeared in dramatic as well as comedic roles in over 30 films, including: Wild Cattle (1934), O Pátio Reitor (1935), As Pupilas do Senhor (1935), As Pupilas (1941), As Pupilas (1941), and As Pátio (1943), O Leir (1947). His last film appearance in 1966, in O Sarilho de Fraldas, was with António Calvário and Madalena Iglésias.
