Pfc. Dalton Beals, 19, from New Jersey, died of overheating in June 2021, during the final stage of Marine recruitment. The inquiry into his death was made public on Monday. The instructor, who the Marines are not naming, was described as a tragic figure, disinterested, and lacking "the maturity, temperament, and leadership skills" required for the job. In a copy obtained by the website Task and Purpose, recruits were reluctant to tell him about their problems, including medical issues. The investigators found that the drill instructor ignored warnings of the temperatures that day. Brigadier General Walker Field, the commanding general at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, is now reading the paper and considering whether or not to refer charges.
