Anthony Gose Life

Anthony Robert Gose (born August 10, 1990) is an American professional baseball pitcher and outfielder in the Cleveland Indians organization.

He changed positions, from center fielder to pitcher, following the 2016 season.

He previously played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Toronto Blue Jays and the Detroit Tigers.

Early life

Gose attended Bellflower High School in Bellflower, California. In his senior year, he had a .443 batting average, a .618 on-base percentage, and 31 stolen bases for the school's baseball team. He pitched for the team as well, throwing as fast as 97 miles per hour (156 km/h). Gose also competed in track and field. He ran the 100 and 200 meter races, and the 4 × 100 and 4 × 400 meter relays. He also attended the Major League Baseball Urban Youth Academy in Compton, California. He received a scholarship to attend the University of Arizona to play college baseball with the Arizona Wildcats.

Career

In the second round of the 2008 Major League Baseball Draft, the Philadelphia Phillies drafted Gose, the second round's top overall pick. He signed with the Philadelphia Phillies, forgoing his college education in exchange for a $772,000 signing bonus. In 2009, he was in the SAL All-Star Game, playing for the Lakewood BlueClaws of the Class A South Atlantic League (SAL). In the minor leagues, he had 76 stolen bases that season, leading all minor league baseball.

The Clearwater Threshers of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League opened in 2010 (FSL). He batted.263 runs, 20 runs batted in (RBIs), 17 doubles, and 11 triples.

Gose and J. Gose were married on July 29, 2010; the twosome was together on July 29, 2010. In exchange for Roy Oswalt and $12 million, A. Happ and Jonathan Villar were traded to the Houston Astros. Brett Wallace, the Toronto Blue Jays' first baseman, was traded straight away to the Toronto Blue Jays for first baseman Brett Wallace. Before the Roy Halladay trade, the Blue Jays had attempted to acquire Gose from the Phillies. He was assigned to the FSL's Dunedin Blue Jays.

Gose was named as the fifth best prospect in the Blue Jays by MLB.com in 2011. He was a member of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats of the Double-Aether League in 2011 (EL). The Fisher Cats were EL champions and Gose scored the winning run in the championship game. In one season, he set a new record for stolen bases, leading off with 70 robbed bases and being tracked 15 times. He also hit 15 home runs. He played in the Venezuelan Winter League from 2011 to 182 in 18 games.

He was rated as the 39th-best prospect in baseball prior to the 2012 season. Gose, a member of the Las Vegas 51s of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League, began the 2012 season. He was selected to appear in the 2012 All-Star Futures Game. Gose had a.286 average in Triple-A in 2012, with 5 home runs, 21 doubles, 10 triples, and 43 runs batted in.

Gose played in 106 games in the 2013 International League, leading to a.239 average, 3 home runs, and 27 RBIs in 393 at bats, as well as 22 stolen bases in 35 attempts.

Gose was called up to the Blue Jays on July 17, 2012, to replace the injured José Bautista. Gose made his MLB debut against the New York Yankees on the day. In the ninth inning off Clay Rapada, Gose struck his first Major League bat on a bunt single. Gose got off to a slow start on July 18, playing right field and batting leadoff, going 0-for-3 with 2 strikeouts.

Gose was back to Triple-A on August 25 when Brandon Morrow was reinstated from the disabled list. Gose was recalled by the Jays on September 4 as major league rosters expanded, and the Triple-A season ended. Gose scored off the Boston Red Sox's first home run in September 8 in a game on September 8. Gose played in 56 games during the 2012 season, winning with a.223 average, 1 home run, and 11 RBIs in 166 at bats, as well as 15 stolen bases.

On March 25, 2013, Gose was trade to the Blue Jays' new Triple-A affiliate Buffalo Bisons. On May 20, the Blue Jays recalled him. Mickey Storey was hired to make room on the Gose 25-man roster. On June 6, Gose was returned to the Bisons. On August 16, he was recalled. Gose was active in 52 games in 2013, winning with a.259 average,.283 on base percentage, 2 home runs, and 12 RBIs in 147 at bats, as well as 4 stolen bases in 7 attempts.

On March 24, 2014, Gose was activated to the Bisons.

For a large portion of the 2014 season, Gose was up and down between Buffalo and Toronto. Gose was optioned back to Buffalo on August 15 to make room for the returning Edwin Encarnacion after hitting.234 with one home run and 14 stolen bases for the big league team. On September 1, he was recalled to the Blue Jays as part of the September roster expansion.

Gose was traded to the Detroit Tigers for second baseman Devon Travis on November 12, 2014. He was the Tigers primary centerfielder in 2015, appearing in 140 games, and he had a.254 average with 23 stolen bases. Gose was selected to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on May 16, 2016. Gose batted.209 with two home runs and seven RBIs in 30 games for Detroit prior to being suspended.

Gose's Triple-A boss Lloyd McClendon was involved in a dugout incident on July 9, 2016. McClendon appeared to be giving "constructive criticism" to Gose, who responded in a dismissive way to those remarks and allegedly swore at his boss during the first game of a doubleheader. Gose was promptly dismissed and did not attend the remainder of the first game nor any of the second game. Gose did not turn up for the game on July 10, 2016, and he had cleared out his locker.

Following a three-day suspension, the Tigers decided on July 13, 2016, going from Gose to their Double-A affiliate. "We talked to Anthony and reiterated our team's hopes for him after collectively assessing the situation in Toledo," said Tigers general manager Al Avila. Anthony's move to Erie is the most significant piece of his overall success as he returns to Detroit.

To make space for Mikie Mahtook on the roster, the Tigers selected Gose for assignment on January 18, 2017. Gose cleared waivers and was outrighted to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens on January 25, 2017. After losing Gose to minor league camp, the Tigers announced on March 26, 2017 that they will attempt to convert him into a pitcher after he came to them with the idea. Gose made his pitching debut with the Lakeland Flying Tigers of the FSL on May 22, pitching an inning and passing 99 mph (159 km/h). On November 6, 2017, he was granted a free agency.

Gose signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers on November 30, 2017. In the Rule 5 draft two weeks later, the Houston Astros selected Gose two weeks later on December 14. Gose was released on outright waivers by the Astros on March 5, 2018, and the Rangers later sent him to the Rangers, where he was assigned to Triple-A. On October 5, 2018, he declared a free agency.

Gose signed a minor-league deal with the Cleveland Indians on December 8, 2018. Gose was accepted to Spring Training for 2020. On November 2, 2020, he became a free agent. On November 17, 2020, Gose signed a minor league contract with the Indians; the agreement included an invitation to the Indians' 2021 big league spring training camp. Gose was drafted into the Indians' taxi squad to start the 2021 season.

On September 20, 2021, the Indians announced Gose's employment.

International career

Gose was named on the roster of the USA national baseball team for qualifying for baseball at the 2020 Summer Olympics in May 2021. He was called to the Olympic roster on July 2 after the team qualified. In the gold-medal tournament, the team advanced to silver, losing to Japan.
