Anthony Geary (born May 29, 1947) is an American actor.
He is best known for his role on ABC daytime's General Hospital's Luke Spencer.
He appeared in Luke in 1978 and received eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series prior to his retirement.
Geary appeared in the 1991 film "Weird Al" Yankovic comedy UHF (1989), The Plumber's Child (1991), and Fish Tank (2009).
Early life
Anthony Geary was born in Coalville, Utah, in 1947, as the son of a contractor father and a homemaker.
Career
Geary made his first television appearance in Room 222, Mannix, Marcus Welby, M.D., The Streets of San Francisco, and Barnaby Jones followed him later. Geary appeared in NBC soap opera Bright Promise from 1971 to 1972.
He played George Curtis, a rapist, in The Young and the Restless, and in 1978, he was hired for a 13-week story arc to play Luke Spencer in ABC soap General Hospital. Luke Spencer began as a hit man and later became a rapist who was enamour with and then married Laura Webber, his victim (played by Genie Francis). Luke Spencer's portrayal on GE became well-received, and he soon moved to a full-time role. The 1981 on-screen wedding of his character and Laura Webber is the most rated soap opera episode of all time.
He is the recipient of a record eight Daytime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He was first nominated in 1980 and then won his first time in 1982. Geary was first nominated again in 1983 before he stepped down in 1984. He appeared in many theater and television productions, as well as in several films, but not at the level of success he had hoped for. Despite the success of Luke Spencer's films, filmmakers such as Oliver Stone pigeonholed Geary purely for the fact that he was a "soap actor." He actively sought a part in "Weird Al" Yankovic's debut UHF (1989), the quiet scientist Philo Farnsworth, who was named for television pioneer Philo Farnsworth. When approaching the film's casting team, Geary, a fan of Yankovic, decided to grow his hair out like Albert Einstein's and remain in character as Philo; he immediately accepted the role.
Geary returned to GM in 1991 as Luke's cousin and look-alike Bill Eckert, thanks to the actor's inability to be someone other than Luke. However, the actor was killed off in 1993 due to poor feedback from the viewing public, and Geary revived the role of Luke. In 1996, Tony appeared in more than 50 stage plays, including an award-winning one-man show titled Human Scratchings. He was nominated in 1997 and 1998 for Outstanding Lead Actor, and in 2000, he won his second time and his third in 2000. He received another nomination in 2003 and 2004 and gained his fourth victory. Geary set the record for the most lead actor wins in 2006 when he took home his fifth title. Geary received his second Emmy Award in 2007, and in 2008, he tied for most lead actor honors with his sixth Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor.
Geary won his seventh Daytime Emmy Award in 2012 and then again in 2015 for his eighth victory in a Drama Series after 16 nominations for the same role played by GM's Luke Spencer. Geary revealed on Friday, May 8, 2015, that he will no longer work with GM. On June 23, 2015, Geary's last scenes on the Associated Hospital set were filmed. His last air date was July 27, 2015. Later in May 2017, he made a cameo appearance on a May 2017 episode to help co-star and former on-screen wife Tracy (played by Jane Elliot) get out of retirement.
In the comedy film UHF, an exception to his dramatic roles is the role of a scientist/studio engineer. He appeared in 1987's Disorderlies, as well as rappers the Fat Boys.
