Last night's Met Gala brought fashion fanatics a whimsical, over-the-top and star-studded event - but while you were likely admiring and judging the red carpet looks in equal measure, there are some wild details that may have gone unnoticed. The A-list affair is an annual fundraiser for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute in Manhattan, led by Vogue's editor-in-chief Anna Wintour since 1995. This year's theme was Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, and the official dress code was Garden of Time. And, while some celebrities stunned in their extravagant and exaggerated outfits, others featured more understated details in their ensembles. Here, FEMAIL has broken it all down for fashion devotees - from poetry hidden in a suit jacket to bugs tucked in updos.

The Met Gala descended on New York City last night and these oblivious haute couture clowns did not disappoint. As always, the preening buffoons were guided by a dress code. This year it was the pretentiously ambiguous theme, 'Garden of Time' - a nod to British novelist J.G. Ballard's 1962 short story about a fancy couple inside a walled compound, who kept encroaching barbarians at bay by clipping magical crystal flowers that set back time. The besieged aristocrats in Ballard's story relied on a shrinking harvest to protect them against the hordes. But these rich boobs - without a hint of irony - enjoy seemingly bottomless budgets for plastic surgeons, cosmetic dentists and Ozempic. By the end of the evening, I was exhausted by the humorless extravagance and wouldn't have been surprised to see that pale-faced ghoul Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games strolling down the carpet next.

It is billed as the Oscars of the fashion world. It is meant to demonstrate how the fashion industry really is a great art form, which these days is wholly inclusive of different shapes, races, genders and ages. Its purpose is to raise funds, ostensibly from its $350,000 (£279,000) per table-of-ten ticket sales, for the museum's work (though I do wonder whether the biggest stars stump up a bean) and to that end, sets its invitees a different theme each year on which to base their outfits. This time, it was florals. What's not to love and linger over?

But it isn't all glitz and glamour, with reports of bizarre celebrity behaviour taking place, including stars donning nappies to avoid having to use the bathroom, having to be sewn into outfits, and even rumours that one celebrity soiled themselves after taking too many diet pills. Eddie Redmayne, 42, and his wife, Hannah Bagshawe, 41, stood out from the crowd at the 2024 Met Gala on Monday as they pushed the boundaries on the red carpet.  The Fantastic Beasts actor took to the red carpet in a black blazer dress with a white net skirt, featuring sheer cut out panels and a wavy ink blot pattern - an androgynous look that matched Hannah's strapless gown with the same pattern. Since partnering with stylist Harry Lambert, Eddie has entered a new era, and has caught the eye of Anna Wintour and made the exclusive guestlist to the biggest night in fashion.

But Zendaya refused to rest on her laurels on Monday night, as she stepped out in yet another incredible look to head to Loewe's after party in New York.  The actress, 27, had already been lauded for her three sensational outfits during the Met Gala, which was held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art earlier on Monday evening.

Shakira looked nothing short of sensational in a daring satin white dress as she arrived at a Met Gala afterparty on Monday.  The singer, 47, was in good spirits as she showed off her incredible figure in the number after making her debut at the A-lister event earlier in the evening.  Her eye catching outfit boasted a tiny bralette covering her assets and featured two large splits showcasing her toned midriff.  

Kim Kardashian was the talk of the town at the Met Gala 2024 in NYC on Monday, wearing a tiny corset dress from Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano.  Having walked the red carpet with her ex-husband Kanye West, 46, in previous years, it may seem odd that the rapper hasn't attended since their split, albeit with his lookalike fashion muse Bianca Censori, 29.  But Kanye hasn't been invited since 2022, when Met Gala director Anna Wintour vowed to never work with him again after his anti-Semitic rants. And even before that, he was a habitual Met Gal skipper - his last appearance was actually in 2019. So instead, he and Bianca instead spent their Monday over 2,000 miles away continuing their move out of their LA mansion.

Speaking to FEMAIL, UK stylist Lisa Talbot admitted she thought Sydney Sweeney , Ayo Edebiri - and the woman of the hour herself, Anna Wintour - outshone the rest. 'Ayo wore the most elegant Loewe 3D floral dress,' she remarked, whereas 'Anna just looked sensationally, quietly elegant with her floral velvet coat adorned in tulips'. Lisa also found that Sydney struck the right balance between sticking on theme and being interesting while letting the artistry of her dress shine. Elsewhere, London-based stylist Ellis Ranson found that the theme 'left lots of room for imagination and to play with not only the floral garden dress code but to bring in the element of sleep' - adding that some were able to land the look perfectly while others were 'underwhelming'.

This year the event was titled Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion while the dress code is The Garden of Time. But the theme was almost very different. Initially the Gala was going to celebrate John Galliano with the theme a retrospective on his career. The 63-year-old British designer, who is head of Maison Margiela, wowed the fashion world in January with his collection widely regarded as a work of genius, with his long-term ally and Met Gala chair Anna Wintour keen to celebrate him at the gala. But after a documentary High and Low explored Gallino's chequered history - including racist comments -  and his decades long fight for forgiveness the museum decided to put the retrospective on an indefinite hold.However, three of the most famous faces on the red carpet - Zendaya (left and inset) , Kim Kardashian (centre with John) and Bad Bunny (right) - all wore looks designed by the star.Galliano also dressed Gwendoline Christie (right inset),  who walked in the January runway show, Adrien Brody , and Indian socialite Natasha Poonaw
