The original Basil, John Cleese (inset), has woven together three Fawlty Towers episodes to make a West End play, with an ending that is the first new Fawlty Towers material in five decades. LUKE JONES: The old ham is simply amazing. Sir Ian McKellen (left) is having a wonderful time, hair full of rollers, a voice of rattling thunder, chunky pearls, and a bosom that could defy tides. He's rightly back in panto, dressed like a Carry On secretary with a face like an embalmed Mrs Slocombe. There is nothing like a classic Dame. Particularly one who is nominated for an Oscar-nominated, bard-bothering knight of the realm. McKellen romps around, dances, murders a song or two, and strips almost naked (no McKellen's performance is complete without it) before plunging into an enchanted lake.
