Early life
Anna Keppen was born in Michigan City, Indiana, and her father died of pulmonary tuberculosis two years later. Keppen, an orphanage of siblings, moved to Chicago where she spent her teen years as a house servant. There, the charming young girl discovered work in minor theatre modelling and acting.
She migrated to the West Coast in 1908, where she developed a fascination with advanced automobiles after working as a model at California car shows. By the early 1910s, Keppen learned to drive, and auto races were already popular. Boswell McGaffey, a Lasky studio historian, claimed she was the first female auto racer to race.
With the success of the Hollywood film industry, she reverted to acting in Phoenix, Arizona, following an accident in a race. Anita King was born in the United Kingdom. Jesse L.
