Andrew Marvell (31 March 1621 – 16 August 1678) was an English metaphysical poet, satirist, and politician who appeared in the House of Commons at various times between 1659 and 1678.
He served as a colleague and friend of John Milton during the Commonwealth period.
In "Upon Appleton House" and "The Garden," the political address "An Horatian Ode to Cromwell's Return from Ireland," as well as "The Character of Holland" and later personal and political satires "Flecknoe" and "The Character of Holland," his poems range from the love-song "To His Coy Mistress" to evocations of an aristocratic country house and garden.
Early life
Marvell was born in Winestead-in-Holderness, East Riding of Yorkshire, Yorkshire's son of a Church of England clergyman named Andrew Marvell. When his father was named Lecturer at Holy Trinity Church in Hull, the family migrated to Hull, and Marvell was educated at Hull Grammar School. Marvell obtained a BA degree at the age of 13. In Trinity College's collection, a portrait of Marvell attributed to Godfrey Kneller appears.
Marvell also traveled in continental Europe from the middle of 1642 to present day. He may have acted as a mentor for an aristocrat on the Grand Tour, but the truth is not clear on this issue. Although England was embroiled in the civil war, Marvell seems to have remained on the continent until 1647. He certainly met Lord Francis and the 2nd Duke of Buckingham, as well as Richard Flecknoe, about whom he would later write a satirical poem. Except that Milton later reported that Marvell had mastered four languages, including French, Italian, and Spanish, it's not known exactly where he went, other than that.
