Early career

In Johnstown, Pennsylvania, where he played football and ran track, the Hawkins attended Bishop McCort High School. He played as a running back in football and had 562 yards rushing and ten touchdowns as a senior. PA Football News and Associated Press named him as a defensive back in second-team All-state, as well as All-conference as a running back. Hawkins competed in sprinting and jumping events in track & field. He ran in 11.33 seconds in the 100 meters and was a member of the 4 x 100 meters relay team, and he was a personal record in sprints. He also took part in long jump (20 ft 2 in) and triple jump (41 ft 8 in).

In Toledo, Ohio, the Hawkins attended college at the University of Toledo. He was a wide receiver and cornerback, making him the first Rocket to play both directions in 48 years. He appeared in 37 games over the past four seasons, beginning in 25. He finished his career with 67 receptions for 1,107 yards and five touchdowns. He had two fumbles, one blocked punt, and 21 tackles as a cornerback.

Professional career

After going undrafted in the 2008 NFL draft, Hawkins was forced to miss out with the Cleveland Browns. He wasn't signed to play in the NFL and was out of football for the entire 2008 season.

On Michael Irvin's football reality show 4th and Long, the Hawkins competed as a contestant. Jesse Holley, the Hawkins, was runner-up. On the last episode, the Hawkins and future CFL player Ahmaad Smith were cut.

He then signed with the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League (CFL) on December 5, 2008.

However, the Hawkins did not qualify for a spot on the Dallas Cowboys roster until his first CFL season in 2009, as seen on Michael Irvin's football reality show 4th and Long. He was named runner-up in the annual race.

The Hawkins then went on to play with the Alouettes for two seasons. During a Thanksgiving Day match-up against the Calgary Stampeders on October 12, 2009, he scored his first CFL touchdown. In two seasons with the Alouettes, he had only 41 receptions, 457 yards, and five touchdowns, but he was a member of the back-to-back Grey Cup championship teams.

Hawkins signed a National Football League contract on January 12, 2011 (NFL). On August 1, 2011, he was released.

On August 1, 2011, the Cincinnati Bengals announced that Hawkins were granted waivers. In Week 2 of the preseason against the New York Jets, he made his team debut on August 21, 2011. He took a 15-yard pass from Dan LeFevour. Hawkins were waived during final-day cuts on September 3, but the following day, he was re-signed to the team's practice squad. After Jordan Shipley was put on injured reserve, Hawkins was added to the active roster.

The Hawkins posted 23 receptions for 263 yards, which was fifth among the team's receivers. On nine third-down situations, he had five rushes for 25 yards converted. Hawkins became a "fan favorite" among Bengals fans who referred to him as "Baby Hawk" after his on-the-field appearance.

In 2012, he had a breakout season for the Bengals, playing in 14 games and totaling 51 receptions for 533 yards and four touchdowns, plus six rushes for 30 yards.

He suffered a serious ankle injury in 2013 and was put on injured reserve with a mark for a return, which means he will return and play in Week 9. He did return and played in the Bengals' final eight games, totaling 12 receptions for 199 yards.

On March 12, 2014, the Hawkins signed an offer sheet with the Cleveland Browns. If the offer sheet had to match before March 18, the Bengals would not have to match or the offer sheet would have become a formality. The Bengals refused to match the offer, and Hawkins joined the Browns for four years, $23.6 million, including a $3.8 million signing bonus. Hawkins led the Browns to 824 yards and two touchdowns in his first season in Cleveland. The Browns placed him on injured reserve on December 23, 2015.

The Browns announced Hawkins on February 27, 2017.

Hawkins announced on May 24, 2017, that they had a one-year deal with the New England Patriots.
