Andrejs Grants Life

Andrejs Grants (born in Riga on March 7, 1955) is a Latvian photographer and tutor.

He studied at the Latvian State University (1973–78) and spent time in the “Ogre” photo studio (1978–1988).

From 1979, he worked at the House of Technical Innovation in Riga, where he gained his reputation as a leading photography tutor for a number of Latvian contemporary photographers, film-makers, and artists, including Ritums Ivanovs, Arnis Balcus, and Gints Berzins.

At his "Ogre" photo studio, he formed an informal group "A" with photographers Inta Ruka, Valts Kleins, and Gvido Kajons.

"A" was influenced by documentary photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Robert Frank, and they used a reportage style to chronicle everyday life in Soviet Latvia, with some of the images being full of criticism.

Andrejs Grants gained international recognition for working with group "A" ideological king Egons Spuris' widow Inta Ruka.

"Latvia: A Change and Unchanging Realities" has been shown around the world.

Andrejs Grants' main theme, which is similar to Ruka's, are people from Latvia.

His photographs captures a variety of Latvian people of various socioeconomic, nationalities, generations, and people in their everyday environment, whether at work or at home, in celebrations or alone.

Neputns released "Andrejs Grants," a monography based on his best work in 2002.
