Andre Royo (born July 18, 1962) is an American actor, director, and writer.

He is best known for his appearance on The Wire's Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins, as well as his appearances on Fringe, Party Down, How to Make It in America, and the 2013 film The Spectacular Now.

On the FOX hit drama series Empire, Royo currently appears as Lucious Lyon defense attorney Thirsty Rawlings.

Personal life

Royo was born in Bronx, New York, on July 18, 1968, and he is of African American and Cuban origins. In auditions, Royo was told by some casting agents that he was "not Black enough" or "not Latino enough" for certain scenes.

Royo attended Mount Saint Michael Academy in The Bronx from 1982 to 1986. Royo is married to Jane Choi, and they have one child named Stella.

Career

Royo made his acting debut in the 1998 film L.A. In a minor role. Without a Map, there is no way to find one. In 1999, he made one-episode guest appearances on the television show Law & Order and Third Watch. In addition, Royo can be seen standing in the audience directly behind the defendant in the Law & Order episode 'Prince of Shadow.' He appeared in John Singleton's remake of the 1971 blaxploitation film Shaft, which was a small part of it. He appeared in the 2002 film G, which was based on The Great Gatsby.

Royo is best known for his role on HBO's crime-drama series The Wire as the heroin addict and confidential informant Reginald "Bubbles" Cousins, a regular character since the show's first season. Royo's portrayal of this character was so convincing that, during on-location filming, he was once approached by a Baltimore resident and given a tiny box of heroin, with the man saying to the in-character Royo, "Man, you need this more than I do." This incident has been described as his "street Oscar" by Royo.

He appeared in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles as a soldier in a unit that was sent back in time in 2008. During the third season of the television show Heroes, Stephen Canfield was introduced as the character Stephen Canfield. In 2008, Royo appeared in the Criminal Minds season 4 episode "Catching Out" as a homeless serial killer.

Royo appeared on a Harvard University panel discussion with colleagues from The Wire Sonja Sohn and Michael K. Williams in October 2009. The panel discussed the benefit of The Wire as a media outlet for at-risk youth so they can relate to and learn positive life lessons from it. Royo guest appeared on the Starz original series Party Down in 2010. He appeared in the third season premiere, as well as the seventh and eighteenth episodes of Fox television series Fringe, playing a taxi driver in the parallel universe later this year.

Royo appeared in NBC's Prime Suspect in 2012 as Santana Cordero, a suspected murderer killing witnesses before he was tried. Antwan "Coffee" Coleman appears in the 2012 film Red Tails. In a Key & Peele sketch, Royo played a bully's alcoholic father. In the 2013 romantic-comedy drama film The Spectacular Now, Royo portrayed geometry teacher Mr. Aster. In Paul Scheer's action comedy film "Trading Faces," Royo appeared as Otis in the episode "Trading Faces" on NTSF: Adult Swim, the late-night block Adult Swim of Cartoon Network. He appeared in the Bob's Burgers episode "Nude Beach" as himself, and then played Marcus as the exterminator. He appeared in the 2015 drama film Lila & Eve as Skaketti, alongside Jennifer Lopez and Viola Davis.

Royo appeared in Marvel's Agent Carter series in 2015 as Spider Raymond, the nightclub "La Martinique," but he became more popular for being an illegal trader. He appeared in Showtime's Happiest as Barry, a close friend of the main characters, Thom and Lee Payne. Royo portrayed San Vincente's Mayor Robert "Bobo" Boston in Amazon Prime's Hand of God. He played Thirsty Rawlings, a hard defense advocate on Fox's Empire.

Royo received a Special Jury Award at the SXSW Film Festival in 2016 for his role in Hunter Gatherer.

He appears alongside Octavia Spencer in Apple's TV+ series Truth Be Told, in which he portrays an attorney.
