Kim has been involved in fashion design since 1962. He founded Salon Andre in Sogong-dong, Central Seoul, at the age of 27, becoming Korea's first male fashion designer. In 1966, he became the first South Korean to host a fashion show in Paris. He would later appear at many other fashion shows in New York, Washington, D.C., Barcelona, Cairo, Sydney, and Beijing.

Kim was chosen chief designer for the 1981 Miss Universe beauty pageant in 1981. In 1988, he created the Korean athletes' uniforms for the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Following this, he was repeatedly invited to the International Olympic Committee's functions (IOC). In 1997, he was given the Presidential Culture and Art Award of South Korea for his contributions to the fashion industry. He was named as the Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF in 2003 and received Italy's Cultural Merit Award.

During the SBS Open in Hawaii in February 2006, Kim held two elaborate private shows, "Fashion Fantasia in Hawaii," at the Turtle Bay Resort, which featured over 140 pieces. Governor Linda Lingle and Mayor Mufi Hannemann attended and remained until the wedding's finale, which featured seven unique gowns and a groom. The hairstyles were created by Aveda Salon and Spa and Liberty Salon Hair and were in keeping with Andre Kim's "signature style" of parted hair adorned with rows of braids tied around the models' heads.

Four LPGA players and Korean celebrities, Shim Jee-ho (Stained Glass), Kim Min-jung (Fashion 70s), and Jung Joon-ho (The Twins, Marrying the Mafia), all modeled in Kim's debut. Kim's fashions featured at the second show, hosted at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Coral Ballroom, as the focal point of a major fundraiser for the University of Hawaii's Textile Production and Human Resources apparel product design and merchandising department. Kim's appearances also appeared on the 20th anniversary of local television station KBFD.
