Andre Burakovsky Career

Playing career

Burakovsky was chosen by SKA Saint Petersburg in the 2012 KHL Junior Draft in the third round (23rd overall) of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and was selected by the Capitals.

Burakovsky made his professional debut with the Malmö Redhawks of HockeyAllsvenskan in 2011-2012, when he was just 16 years old. At the 2012 IIHF World U18 Championships, he earned a silver medal while competing with Team Sweden.

Burakovsky started working with the Capitals on September 4, 2013. For the 2013-2014 season, he joined the Erie Otters of the Ontario Hockey League.

Burakovsky scored his first NHL goal against Dustin Tokarski of the Montreal Canadiens on October 9, 2014. He was the second fastest Capitals player to score in their first NHL appearance and the 13th Capitals player to score in his NHL debut. He appeared in 79 games, scored 17 goals, and had 21 assists, from 2015 to 2016.

Burakovsky scored the game's first goal against the Dallas Stars on January 22, 2017, tying for the most consecutive team games scoring the first goal. Jonathan Cheechoo was the last player to do so during the 2007-08 NHL season.

On July 4, 2017, he agreed to a two-year, $6-million contract with the Washington Capitals. Burakovsky required thumb surgery after being injured in a game against the Florida Panthers on October 24 and was expected to miss six to eight weeks. After missing 20 games, he returned to the Capitals lineup on December 8, 2017.

Burakovsky was sidelined with an injury during the 2018 Stanley Cup playoffs and missed the remainder of the Capitals first round against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Burakovsky scored two goals against the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 to help the Capitals reach the 2018 Stanley Cup Finals after missing ten playoff games and going pointless after returning from home. "I think if I'm doing something wrong, I'm thinking about it for a long time," he said, "I suspect it's in my head." I have a summer job, so that's something I have to work on. Burakovsky won the Stanley Cup with the Capitals on June 7, 2018.

Burakovsky was traded to the Colorado Avalonche in exchange for Scott Kosmachuk and a second and third-round pick in 2020 on June 28. Burakovsky accepted a one-year, $3.25 million deal with the Avalanche on July 15, 2019, fulfilling his qualifying request. Burakovsky made his Avalanche debut against the Calgary Flames in the inaugural game of the 2019-20 season on October 3, 2019, registering an assist. Burakovsky responded to his expanded role with the Capitals by securing a spot among the top six forwards for the first time in his career, placing third on the team in scoring with a career high 45 points through 58 regular season games. In a game against the Buffalo Sabres on February 4, he scored a career-high four points (1 goal, 3 assists). Burakovsky returned from the COVID-19 pandemic pause in the playoffs to notch 7 goals and 17 points in only 15 games. In Game 7 of the Western Conference semi-finals, he scored two points, but Colorado was unable to help Colorado beat the Dallas Stars.

Burakovsky, a restricted free agent, had signed a two-year, $9.8 million deal extension with the Avalanche on October 10, 2020. Burakovsky mainly appeared alongside Nazem Kadri and Brandon Saad in the pandemic delayed 2020–21 season. In a 3-2 victory over the Arizona Coyotes on February 26, 2021, he made his 400th appearance in the league for the fourth time. On May 1021, he scored his 100th goal in career against the Vegas Golden Knights, and ended the regular season with Avalanche, just one goal and one point shy of his previous season's record of 19 goals and 44 points through 53 games. In a second-round loss to the Golden Knights, he was unable to recreate his previous playoff form with the Avalanche in the post-season.

Burakovsky scored his first hat trick in a match against the Florida Panthers on December 12, 2021. The Avalanche thrashed the Nashville Predators in the first round of the 2022 Stanley Cup playoffs, then defeating the St. Louis Blues in the second round to advance to the Western Conference Final for the first time in 20 years. Burakovsky was scratched from two games in the second round series. The Edmonton Oilers defeated the Edmonton Oilers in four games to advance to the 2022 Stanley Cup Finals, Burakovsky's second Cup Finals appearance, but he missed two games due to injury while shooting-blocking. Burakovsky scored the game-winning goal in overtime, his second game in the playoffs to that point. He scored again in a 7-0 victory in Game 2, but he sustained a broken thumb that kept him out of the lineup as the Avalanche advance to the Stanley Cup champions after defeating the Lightning in six games.

Following the conclusion of Burakovsky's deal with the Avalanche, he was signed to a lucrative five-year, $27.5 million deal with the Seattle Kraken.
