EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Lady Starmer might learn a lesson from Labour's last first lady Sarah Brown about clothing

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 27, 2024
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: As Lady Starmer (right) rethinks how she pays for her frocks, she might learn a lesson from Labour's last first lady Sarah Brown (left). Eyebrows were raised when the then PM's wife wore a collection of expensive frocks at a G2 summit.  No one was funding her fashion habit. She had rented the outfits at a fraction of the cost of buying, from her preferred designers including Amanda Wakeley.

This one menopause side-effect no one talks about meant I had to throw out half my wardrobe... and no, I didn't go up a dress size!

As I drop another item onto the bedroom floor, my daughter, Sophie, fixes me with a quizzical look. We're sorting through my cupboards, so I can have a clear-out and she can assess if there's anything worth selling online. Sophie's clearly perplexed by the sheer volume of items being discarded. 'You really want to get rid of all of these things?' she muses with disbelief, as she holds up a size ten lilac-coloured number from Reiss which I bought several years ago. Memorably (for me, anyway), I wore it for my inaugural appearance on Question Time. It's not the only outfit to be jettisoned during this ruthless cull - from the royal blue Max Mara dress, accessorised with a gilt star-shaped belt, that I wore to a family wedding, to a yellow button-down frock sprigged with white roses and which, though only a few years old, would still see me through plenty of summer parties.

Can renting your entire wardrobe make you more stylish... and save you money?

It's 4pm on a Thursday and I'm walking to the nursery gates dressed in a Burberry trench and carrying a Gucci handbag worth £490. It's safe to say this is not my usual attire; my typical nursery pick-up look involves jeans and trainers. Yet they're not the only designer items to make an appearance in my wardrobe this week. On Monday I wore a Chanel jumper to the supermarket. For a work meeting on Wednesday I shrugged on a pink Amanda Wakeley coat. My sudden luxe-up isn't the result of a shopping blow-out. Instead, I rented my outfits for a snip of the cost. That Burberry trench, which would have cost £1,290 new, set me back just £144 to borrow for seven days. Estimated to be worth over £2 billion by 2029, the UK fashion rental market is booming.
