As he attempts to claw back the masterpiece from his creditors, Petra Ecclestone's ex-husband James Stunt denies buying a £4 million Van Dyck painting at the heart of the bankruptcy trial

Today, bankrupt socialite Stunt said he did not buy the centuries-old portrait, but only recommended his father did. Stunt, who lived with F1 heiress Ecclestone from 2011 to 2017, is fighting a court dispute with his bankruptcy trustees over Sir Anthony Van Dyck's painting The Chee Sisters. The trustees claim James owns it, but Geoffrey Stunt and his brother allege that the older man purchased the work in 2013 for £600,000. At a trial at Rolls Building in London today, James, who declared bankrupt in June 2019, informed a court that he was involved in the painting when it was seen in 2012 but decided against it.

Ex-husband James Stunt of Petra Ecclestone appears at High Court in an attempt to save Sir Anthony Van Dyke's £4 million masterpiece from his creditors' hands

Stunt allegedly bought the oil painting in 2013 for £600,00, according to his creditors. However, after he announced bankruptcy in June 2019, Geoffrey's father argued he was the correct owner as the photograph was paid for with a cheque drawn from his bank account, according to the High Court. In a black taxi accompanied by a glamorous lady, James Stunt appeared in court. The former bullion dealer did not make a single comment as he entered the building wearing a navy pinstriped, three-piece suit, white shirt, and a navy and white stripe tie.

According to a jurist, James Stunt was a well-known art collector who relyed on Petra Ecclestone to help him pay for paintings. Van Dyck's £4 million masterpiece tells the court that he was a well-known art dealer who sold him Van Dyck's £4 million masterpiece

A court heard today that James Stunt, pictured with Petra Ecclestone, right, conspired with his father to rob his creditors of a £4 million painting after he was declared bankrupt. Stunt's creditors Ian Defty adn Adrian Hyde is trying to show that they are the rightful owners of the Van Dyck masterpiece, not Stunt or his father Geoffrey, right.
