Ruhakana Rugunda, Mbabazi's childhood friend, was sent by President Yoweri Museveni to replace Mbabazi as Prime Minister on September 18, 2014. Many see this move as Museveni's way of punishing Mbabazi for his rumourous presidential campaign. Mbabazi declared on June 15th, 2015, he would run against Yoweri Museveni for the National Resistance Movement's nomination for president at the party's convention on October 4th. President Museveni's reaction made the announcement "poor conduct and premature." Following a lot of infighting between top-ranking party leaders and Mbabazi himself, Prime Minister Benjamin May declared himself as an outsider on July 31. The Democratic Alliance (TDA), a loose alliance of minor political parties striving to win the presidency, is behind his candidature.

He received 1.3 percent of the vote in the 2016 general election, finishing third.
