Early life
Alison Lapper was born in Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire, on April 7, 1965. Phoscomelia was a disorder that caused her arms and legs to be short. She was institutionalized in her youth and is now distant from her relatives. She felt that their aim was not to assist her, but to make her appearance less threatening to others. She stopped using them and found life much simpler without external assistance.
At the age of 17, she left Chailey Heritage School, Sussex, and migrated to London. She then attended Queen Elizabeth's Foundation for Disable People in Banstead, Surrey, where she learned to drive. She earned both 'O' and 'A'levels in art at Sutton College of Learning for Adults before completing pre-foundation and foundation courses at Heatherley School of Fine Art.
Lapper enrolled in the Faculty of Art and Architecture at the University of Brighton, graduating with a first-class honours degree in Fine Art in 1994.
