Alice Frey Life

Alice Frey (25 June 1895-1981) was a Belgian painter. Alice, one of three children, was born in Antwerp. * She was educated as a dressmaker, but later taught as a school teacher. The Freys left their home in the First World War and migrated to Ostend, as with many Belgian families. * Alice met painter James Ensor who became a close friend. Ensor boosted Alice's interest in art during the war, and she enrolled as an artist in the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where she studied drawing and painting. She met Georges Marlier, a noted art critic and painter, as a student. * They married in 1922. * They were a member of Lumière, a newspaper that distributed a journal. * Alice founded a second journal, A Ira, and they were part of Belgium's avant-garde movement in the 1920s. Alice Frey's work was widely displayed in her lifetime. * She became severely deaf in Ostend's later years and lived alone. * Much of her work was sold at auction before her death in 1981, and only the tiny collection of her willed to Ostend is available. Frey's work was influenced by Marc Chagall, Ensor, and Edgard Tytgat. * Her early works are expressionist, while her later works may be closer to magical realism.
