Alfred Peet Life

Alfred H. Peet (March 10, 1920-2007) was a Dutch-American entrepreneur and the maker of Peet's Coffee & Tea in Berkeley, California.

Peet is widely credited with the US's specialty coffee revival. Peet has been dubbed "the Dutchman who taught America how to drink coffee" among coffee historians. Peet taught his roasting beans to Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl, and Gordon Bowker, who pioneered the technique in Seattle and established Starbucks in 1971.

Alfred Peet Career

Life and career

Peet was born in Alkmaar, The Netherlands, where his father ran a small coffee roasting business before World War II. Peet left London, where he had trained with Twinings coffee and tea company, to serve as a tea taster in the Dutch East Indies and New Zealand before emigrating to San Francisco, California, where he worked in the coffee roasting industry.

Peet opened a coffee store in Berkeley, California, on April 1, 1966, being dissatisfied with the poor quality of coffee in the United States. He likened low-quality coffee in the United States to World War II "rationed" coffee.

Despite being pushed to expand the company, he remained stalwart in keeping the original Walnut and Vine location, zealously guarding the quality of the coffee bearing his name. He bought a 5,000 square feet (460 m2) warehouse in Emeryville, which was followed by a 300-pound roaster in 1976. He spent many years roasting beans in the back of the store using one-pound and then five-pound roasters in the early 1970s. Peet had two more grocery stores by that time: one on Piedmont in Oakland and the other on Palo Alto's University. He also sold roasted-to-order, 20 to 50 pound bags of beans to restaurants around the Bay Area.
