Greece's ruling New Democracy party wins general election but with no majority to rule alone

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis (pictured) and his opposition were credited with 40.9 percent of the votes, a 20-point lead ahead of his nearest competitor, leftist challenger Alexis Tsipras' Syriza party, which received 20.1 percent, with only over half of the vote counted. Mitsotakis will either enter bitter talks with his rivals on Monday, seeking a coalition or run for a new election, most likely in early July. Following a fatal train accident on February 28 that killed 57 people (pictured right), Mitsotakis' fame was knocked to a new height. Even though Greece's notoriously poor rail network has suffered from years of underinvestment, the government initially blamed the crash on human error.
