Alexey Borisovich Miller (born 31 January 1962) is a Russian business administrator.
Miller is the Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors and the Chairman of the Management Committee (CEO) of Russian energy company Gazprom, Russia's largest company and the world's biggest public energy supplier.
Early life
Miller was born in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) to an assimilated Russo-German family. He studied at the Leningrad Institute of Finance and Economics from which he received a PhD in economics.
Career
Miller's first role was as an engineer-economist in the Leningrad research institute of civil construction's general planning division, 'LenNIIProekt.'
He served as a junior researcher at the Leningrad Finance and Economics Institute for a short time in 1990 and later became Section head for the Economic Reform Committee of the Leningrad City Council's Executive Committee.
Miller served on the Committee for External Relations of the Saint Petersburg Mayor's Office from 1991 to 1996, under Vladimir Putin. He was also deputy chairman of the External Relations Committee during this period and was in charge of the markets monitoring division at the Foreign Economic Relations Directorate.
He was Director of Planning and Investments of the Port of Saint Petersburg from 1996 to 1999. He served as the Baltic Pipeline System's Director General from 1999 to 2000.
He was named Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation in 2000 and has been Chairman of Gazprom's Management Committee since 2001. He has been deputy chairman of Gazprom's board of directors since 2002. Putin arranged Miller's appointment as CEO so that his former colleague would put an end to complaints that some of Gazprom's employees had detrimental third-party relations.
Miller was included on the list of Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) in April 2018, along with 23 other Russian nationals. Individuals and organisations within the United States are forbidden from dealing with him under the felony. Miller was banned by the British government following Russia's 2022 takeover of Ukraine, which meant freezing his assets and a travel ban.
