New York Yankees ace Gerrit Cole plunked Red Sox slugger Rafael Devers in the first inning of Saturday's loss in the Bronx, and Boston manager Alex Cora is convinced it was intentional. Devers saw four inside pitches Cole in his first at-bat on Saturday, the last of which caught a piece of the three-time All-Star. Then in the fourth, Cole intentionally walked Devers despite the fact that nobody was even on base. 'I wasn't surprised at all [about the intentional walk] because in the first at-bat I felt that [Cole] hit [Devers] on purpose,' Cora said after the Sox won, 7-1. 'He doesn't want to face him. That's the bottom line. He told us with the intentional walk that in the first at-bat he hit him. He hit him. ... We took exception to that.'

Rob Manfred, the MLB commissioner, has expressed regret for the Astros' sign-stealing scandal, in which he largely gave players anonymity for their positions in the case. According to MLB investigators, the Astros used a monitor in the dugout that included a video stream from center field, allowing them to see the signs from the opposing catcher throughout the 2017 season (and postseason) and a portion of the 2018 regular season. Players in the dugout would bang on a garbage can with a bat to alert a teammate of an off-speed pitch.

Jeff Luhnow, the general manager of the New England Astros, allegedly deleted personal information from his phone in the hopes of releasing it to Major League Baseball investigators during the 2019 investigation into allegations of unlawful sign stealing by the team's players two years ago. Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch were both suspended for a season by MLB and fired by the Astros on January 13, 2020, after league investigators discovered that Houston players were stealing opposing catchers' signs en route to the club's first championship in 2017. Now author Evan Drellich claims Luhnow was accused of deleting electronic evidence relating to the probe but told MLB officials that he was editing personal photos of his wife.'
