Alejandro Bedoya (born April 29, 1987) is an American international soccer player who plays for Philadelphia Union as an attacking midfielder or winger.
Early life
Bedoya, a Colombian immigrant, was born in New Jersey and raised in Weston, Florida, where he competed for youth soccer for local clubs; the AYSO team: Weston Fury; and FUTSOC USA ENIGMA Elite. When competing for St. Thomas Aquinas High School in 2005, he captured a state championship. Club career
Bedoya chose to investigate alternatives outside of the United States, since college seniors often find their way to the MLS SuperDraft. In late 2008, he signed a long-term contract with Swedish club Rebro SK and joined the club on January 7, 2009. He made his 73rd appearance for Rebro SK on April 6 on his first appearance as a replacement. In the Svenska Cupen, he scored his first goal for Rebro SK after giving the team a 1–0 lead over Assyriska FF. Bedoya made his way into the starting lineup and became a mainstay in central midfield in rebro, Saskatchewan, 4–3–3. Bedoya was granted a trial in Birmingham, England, in February 2011, but was not signed.
Bedoya had agreed to personal terms with Scottish club Rangers, pending the acceptance of a work permit, with the intention of returning in January 2012 when the Allsvenskan season was complete. On August 17, 2011, however, Rebro SK and Rangers decided an undisclosed fee, allowing him to join Rangers immediately.
Bedoya made his debut as a second-half replacement in a Scottish Premier League match against Aberdeen on August 28, 2011. In a 5–0 victory over Dundee United on May 2, 2012, he scored his first Rangers goal to help secure second place for the Glasgow club.
Bedoya signed a short-term deal with Helsingborgs IF when Rangers went to resignation on August 10, 2012. Bedoya's team lost 2–1 to Elfsborg on August 18, 2012, on his debut with the club. In the UEFA Champions League home-and-away series against Celtic, Helsingborg was defeated on a 4–0 aggregate; the Swedish champions were defeated on a 4–0 aggregate. Helsingborg was put in the 2012-13 UEFA Europa League group stage, where they finished in third place and Bedoya scored two goals against Hannover 96 and FC Twente. Bedoya received a number of offers after his Helsingborg service came to an end, but he decided to wait for at least six months.
Bedoya's newly promoted Ligue 1 team Nantes joined Bedoya on August 7, 2013. On August 25, 2013, he made his first Ligue 1 appearance for Nantes against reigning champions PSG. Bedoya's first goal for the club came in Nantes' 1–0 victory over AC Ajaccio on October 19, 2013, when he scored the team's only goal three minutes from time, extending the club's winning streak to four games in a row. Bedoya's manager, Michel Der Zakarian, lauded him for his intelligent play and technical excellence during the match. Bedoya scored his second goal for the club and first at Nantes' home ground, the Stade de la Beaujoire, on December 3, 2013, notching Nantes' equalizer goal in an eventual 2–1 victory over struggling Valenciennes. Bedoya's scoring streak began on December 6, 2013, netting the game's only goal in Nantes's victory over Marseille, which moved Nantes into fourth place and caused the dismissal of Marseille boss Élie Baup. Bedoya scored with a header in the 118th minute for FC Nantes in a Coupe de France match against FC Girondins de Bordeaux on February 10, 2016.
Bedoya joined the Philadelphia Union from Nantes for a reported $1 million transfer fee as a designated player on August 3, 2016. He made all ten appearances for the Union during the remainder of the year and scored two goals, including the lone playoff goal against Toronto FC.
Bedoya took over for Brian Carroll as the Union's captain for the 2017 season. Bedoya, who was later deployed as a center attacking "number ten" as the team continued to look for a dedicated player for that position, becoming a mainstay of the Union's midfield. As the Union's tactics changed through the next two seasons, Bedoya will play a more familiar position on the right wing and as a midfield shuttler.
Bedoya won by 5–1 victory over Washington, D.C. United in the third minute of his victory over the Union over 5–1 victory over the Union over D.C. Bedoya has signed a contract extension with the Union ahead of the 2020 season, 2021, with a club option for 2021, however, he will no longer be a designated player. The 2020 season was the most profitable to date. Bedoya captained the Union through to the semi-finals of the MLS is Back tournament, winning the team's first trophy of the season, the 2020 Supporters' Shield, amid the team's first trophy, the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Union revealed in September 2022 that they had signed Bedoya to a new one-year contract through the 2023 MLS season.
International career
Bedoya was a member of the US U-23 national team preparing for the 2008 Summer Olympics, but he was not selected for the squad that traveled to China.
Bedoya's first call up to train with the senior United States national team was received on December 22, 2009. Bedoya and the other players' training in Carson began on January 4, 2010, leading to a friendly match against the Honduran national team on January 23. Bedoya earned his first senior cap in the 61st minute of this match, when the United States was down 3–0 and playing with ten guys. Bedoya was selected to the preliminary 30-man roster for the 2010 World Cup and played against the Czech Republic in a tune-up friendly, but was cut from the final 23-man roster. In a friendly against Brazil in August 2010, he made his first international appearance. Benny Feilhaber had been unable to participate in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup due to a shoulder injury while playing for his club team, the New England Revolution of Major League Soccer.
Bedoya scored his first international goal in a friendly match against Guatemala at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California, on July 5, 2013. He was included in the United States roster for the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup, assisting the national team in winning its first Gold Cup title in six years.
