Alejandro Amenábar Career

Film career

Amenábar made three short films between 1991 and 1994 that inspired his first full-length films: La Cabeza, Himenóptero, and Luna.

Alejandro was greatly aided in his career by José Luis Cuerda. José Luis Cuerda's friend gave him the script of Himenóptero so he'd give his verdict. Cuerda was also interested in Amenábar's work. He went on to become the producer of Thesis (1996), one of Amenábar's most well-known films, putting his name on the map. Thesis was a dramatic set at the Complutense University of Madrid's School of Information Sciences. He captured the hearts of critics in Berlin's film festival and went on to win seven Goyas, including Best Picture and Best New Director.

Abre Los Ojos, a science fiction film that had a big success at international festivals such as Berlin and Tokyo, was released in 1997. Tom Cruise, who appeared in a remake of Vanilla Sky, was impressed by the film, and he bought the rights to adapt and produce the film.

The Others, a ghost tale starring Nicole Kidman, was his third full length film. It was a hit on international levels, especially in Spain, where it was the most watched film of the year. The Others were also very popular in the United States, where it was at the top of the box office for several weeks. In 2001, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival, garnering eight Goyas, including the Best Picture and Best Director, and was nominated for Best European Film Movie.

The Sea Inside, a true life tale about a quadriplegic Ramón Sampedro (played by Javier Bardem), which explored topics such as euthanasia, abortion, or "the right to a dignified life," the film received 14 Goyas awards in 2004, as well as an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2004.

In 2008, Amenábar's next film, Mists of Time, was released; however, he later changed the name to Agora. Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella were among the film's main stars, as well as Rachel Weisz and Max Minghella. Agora premiered on October 9, 2009, and it's the most expensive Spanish film in history.

Amenábar's thriller Regression, starring Ethan Hawke and Emma Watson, returned from a hiatus of almost seven years in 2015. In September 2015, the film made its world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, where reviews were skepticism.

Amenábar is also the composer of his films' soundtrack, as well as others directed by José Luis Cuerda and Nobody Knows Anybody directed by Mateo Gil, Butterfly's Tongue.
