YOUR fifty classic films have been rediscovered. After BRIAN VINER's Top 100 films list, our readers responded with a passionate tweet, so here are our favorites — as well as his verdict

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 6, 2024
BRIAN VINER: If I compiled my list again today, I still wouldn't have space for The Italian Job, Forrest Gump, The Great Escape, or Titanic, which all of which encouraged readers to write in. By the way, that doesn't mean I don't like or even love those photos (although not Titanic), which makes me wish the iceberg would strike a bit sooner). Here is a list of the Top 20 movies you should have included in my Top 100 list, as well as your reasons for... The Shawshank Redemption (left), Mary Poppins (right), and Saving Private Ryan (inset).

Ewan McGregor discusses whether or not he'll reprise Obi-Wan Kenobi's legendary role one more time

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 1, 2024
Ewan McGregor has had to pretend about resurrecting his legendary role as Obi-Wan Kenobi ahead of the filming and shoot for the new Disney+ series. So some followers may not take the actor at his word when he says that no one from the Star Wars universe has contacted him about a new turn as the Jedi Master. But that was exactly his position when he sat down for an interview with Los Angeles Dbible while out promoting his latest film A Gentleman In Moscow, in which he stars alongside his real-life wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead. "Let's do another one," Lucasfilm or Disney said to me. Obi-Wan was created as a limited run, and it's out and about it, and people are raving about it.' "I love doing it," says the guy. We hope we get a chance to do another one, and I'm sure we will. Well, I'm pretty sure I'm a few years before I'm the same age as Alec Guinness was in A New Hope. So there's time to share more tales in there.'

The 100 greatest classic films ever and where you can watch them right now: Veteran critic BRIAN VINER'S movies everyone should see at least once - and they don't include Marvel, Shawshank Redemption or Titanic

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 10, 2024
Here are 100 films that I believe every person should see at least once in their lifetime, and all of them should make you laugh, cry, gasp, or think. In some instances, perhaps all four are present. I hope my list would bring you some good cinematic treats, or better still, introduce you to them. Happy viewing!

Who has played the most different characters in the same film?

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 23, 2024
ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS: Alec Guinness played eight characters in the 1949 film Kind Hearts And Coronets. He took on the roles of all eight members of a ducal family that must be bumped off by relative Louis D'Ascoyne Mazzini, who is determined on becoming the Duke. In the 1996 film The Nutty Professor, Eddie Murphy portrays seven members of the Klump family. The Guinness World Record for 'the most characters played by one actor in a single film' goes to Aaranu Njan, which is a 2017 Indian film. Johnson George is one of history's most popular characters, including Jesus, Mahatma Gandhi, Leonardo da Vinci, Charlie Chaplin, and Che Guevara. Nevertheless, this film is marginally more than a home-made film.

ALEXANDRA SHULMAN'S NOTEBOOK: The only thing you'll lose on a faddy diet is your sanity!

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 15, 2023
I'm signing up for Zoe, the popular system that allows you to wear a blood sugar monitor on your upper arm and claims to be both healthier and less bloated. Ah, and I'm losing some weight. Who knows if it will make a difference. It's likely that it would take a while, as well as other diets I have tried over the years. But the biggest thing isn't whether they work, but why they - and millions of others - attempt them.

How John le Carré ran his many mistresses like spies - with code names, dead drops and safe houses: Only now, after the great writer's death, can his biographer reveal the true scale of his philandering

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 7, 2023
With 11 women who had affairs with identified, the biographer of late David Cornwell, who was best known by his pen name John le Carré, can now reveal the truth about his love life. The majority of them were younger than he was, although some of them were much younger. One of the au pair was looking after his youngest son. He had two affairs, the first in the mid-1980s and the second 14 years later. I noticed he was working with a journalist who was more than 40 years old.

The classic novel, according to EM Forster's seminal A Passage to India, has 'offensive' words and 'attitudes of this time.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 20, 2023
Academic commentators of the notable work have referred to the decision by including a trigger warning in the US version of EM Forster's A Passage To India by publishers The Modern Library has been described as 'troubling' by academic followers of the valuable work. The warning, they say, is "completely unnecessary" and that the job is being "dragged into a culture war with no connection to the subject matter.' The book is set against the backdrop of the British Raj and the Indian independence movement in the 1920s, and it is notable for its critique of imperialism and depictions of Indians as culturally equals.

The creation of Lawrence of Arabia's legendary myth 60 years ago. The frightening truth behind its construction

www.dailymail.co.uk, December 11, 2022
The audience at the Royal Command Performance at the Odeon Leicester Square was greeted with David Lean's triumphant labour of love, Lawrence Of Arabia, which had cost more than $100 and belonged to a dazzling cast including Peter O'Toole (far left), Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif (second from left), Anthony Quinn, Anthony Quayle, and Jose Ferrer. During filming, O'Toole developed an instant rapport with Sharif, his Egyptian co-star, who was terrified ahead of the rousing Aqaba raid scene in which their characters, on camels, were to lead 400 extras on a mile-and-a-half charge (pictured below). They both slid back several glasses of brandy and milk, with the result that Sharif, who was still on rope, slowly slid upside down as the charge was carried out. O'Toole stayed upright until the end, when he collapsed and was nearly killed by the extras' stampeding horses.

PATRICK MARMION reviews Let the Right One In a horror story that will tug at your heart: a horror tale that will pull at your heart

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 4, 2022
PATRICK MARMION: How do you feel about horror stories? Even with a crucifix and a bottle of holy water, some people will not go near them. However, there is a fairy tale inside many a horror tale about trying to get out. After she stepped in next door, it was certainly the case with John Ajvide Lindqvist's book about Oskar, a bullied adolescent in suburban Stockholm who befriends teenage vampire Eli Eli Eli. (The book was adapted by Lindqvist himself for the Swedish film of the same name). And Bryony Shanahan's mesmerizing revival of Jack Thorne's 2013 film entangles the reader's jugular afresh. . . The result was pleasantly creepy.

RICHARD KAY reveals that John le Carre's love life was even more audacious than his books

www.dailymail.co.uk, October 8, 2022
RICHARD KAY: On the internet, the words tremble with excitement: "This was sex as I had never heard it before.' . . This was sex that only the hero and heroine can have; sex for the cameras; sex for the Olympics; sex for the gods; sex for the gods.' So begins what the writer claims was her two-stage affair, the first spanning 30 months with distinguished author John le Carre. The revelation is supposed to be a literary bombshell, and Suleika Dawson's book The Secret Heart is certainly loaded with lascivious and tantalizing detail. In fact, the non-stop sexual encounters between the vivacious publishing assistant and the popular and married author, 25 years her senior, are not for the fainthearted. They are annotated in such detail, and with such intimate knowledge, it is difficult to believe that the bedroom antics occurred almost 40 years ago.
