Alberth Josué Elis Martnez (born 12 February 1996), also known as La Panterita (The Little Panther), is a Honduran footballer who plays as a forward for the Houston Dynamo and the Honduras national team.

He also competed for Honduras in the 2016 Summer Olympics and aided them in finishing 4th.

Personal life

Elis was born in San Juan Tela to Osman Elis and Yohani Martnez. Since the family moved to San Pedro Sula when Elis was young, he grew up in a rough and violent neighborhood. Osman Elis Martez Martez, his older brother, is a professional footballer who last played for Honduras Prostitu. His father, a right midfielder who competed in the Honduran second division, was a professional footballer; a right midfielder. Elis is of Garifuna origins.

David Suazo, a former Honduras striker and also from San Pedro Sula, was given the nickname of "La Panterita," a Spanish term for the little panther. Elis is back in style and has more than 100 pairs of shoes on sale. Elis has done volunteer work for his country, including donating computers to his old school, donating shoes to children, and repairing local parks.

Club career

Elis was first a student at Real Espaa in San Pedro Sula. He then moved to Olimpia, where he made his professional debut in September 2013.

Elis made his professional debut on September 2nd, 2013 against Motagua in a Liga Nacional match against Motagua. Elis came on as a replacement for Anthony Lozano in the Clasico Capitalino, securing a 2–1 victory. In a CONCACAF Champions League match against Alpha United, he scored his first professional goal on 5 August 2014, giving Olimpia a 1–0 victory. In a 4–0 victory over Marathón on August 24, 2014, his first league goal was scored. In a 2–1 win over his former team Real Espaa on September 28, Elis will score again against Vida on September 21 and also score the winner.

Elis joined Monterbe on August 26, 2016, after 61 games and 25 goals with Olimpia. In a 0–0 draw with Club Tijuana, he made his Montere debut on September 10, 2016. Montery loaned Elis to the Houston Dynamo in 2017 after only five appearances and no goals or assists.

Elis made his Dynamo debut in the first game of the 2017 season on March 4th; a 2–1 win over the defending champions Seattle Sounders. Elis scored his first Dynamo point in the team's next game when the Columbus Crew defeated the Columbus Crew 3-1. In a 4–2 loss to the Portland Timbers on March 18, he had his first assist for Houston. Elis scored two late goals on September 27 to help the Dynamo overcome a 3-1 deficit. For the first time since 2013, he helped the team qualify for the MLS Playoffs. Elis scored the winning goal in extra time against Sporting Kansas City in the first game of the playoffs. In 30 appearances in all leagues, he had a good debut season, scoring 11 goals and four assists. The Dynamo reported on December that they had obtained Elis on a complete transfer from Montermo.

Elis had two assists in the first game of the 2018 season, a 4–0 victory over Atlanta United. He got off to a good start to the season by scoring eight times and assisting five others in the first 12 games and being named to the MLS Team of the Week four times during the week. Elis was selected in the 2018 MLS All-Star Game team on June 29, 2018 and will face Juventus. He took over for Carlos Vela as a halftime replacement. He scored an assist in the 96th minute to help prevent a 2–2 draw with LAFC on July 3rd. The Dynamo beat Philadelphia Union 3–0 to win their first ever US Open Cup final on September 26, Elis had two assists. The Elis had a 21-year record in MLS, as a club single season record.

Elis appeared as a sub in the Dynamo's CONCACAF Champions League second leg with CD Guastatoya on February 27, 2019 and aided the Dynamo in a aggregate match that gave the Dynamo the lead on aggregate. The Dynamo beat the Vancouver Whitecaps 3–2 on March 16th, Elis scored one and assisted on both of Memo Rodriguez's goals. He was selected to the MLS Team of the Week due to his efforts. Elis was able to help the Dynamo get off to a quick start in their 4th minute against the Colorado Rapids in Houston's next game. He wasn't done terrorizing the defense, but he did score one himself and hit two critical crosses that resulted in own goals, giving the Dynamo a 4–1 victory over Colorado. Elis was selected to the MLS Team of the Week once more. Elis stayed hot in Dynamo's next game, scoring on a Manotas pass to give Elis a point in his third straight game and help the Dynamo win by 2–1 over the San Jose Earthquakes. Elis converted a penalty to score in his fourth straight game on April 19, but the Dynamo will lose 2–1. Elis helped the Dynamo get off to a good start to the season by taking the ball from the right wing before sending in a low cross that Manotas put into the net in the 3rd minute. Houston will defeat the Columbus Crew 2–0. Elis aided the Dynamo beat rivals FC Dallas in a Texas Derby match on May 4th, earning them an assist in a 2–1 victory. He made four appearances in the Dynamo's next five games, scoring one goal and one assist, before moving to join the Honduras national team for the 2019 Gold Cup. Elis scored once and received two assists in a 4–0 victory over the New York Red Bulls in his first game back with the Dynamo since the Gold Cup. He was selected to the MLS Team of the Week because of his work. Elis was given a red card on July 17th after being caught in the face of a referee in the 6th minute of a match against Atlanta United. The Dynamo lost the game 5–0. Elis received an additional one-game suspension by the league on top of his automatic one-game suspension. Elis returned from his suspension in a 1–0 loss to the Chicago Fire on August 3rd, but he did not get a yellow card, indicating that he was suspended from the Dynamo's next match due to yellow card accumulation. In his next eight matches, he struggled after returning to the team, scoring once and collecting no assists. Elis won a 4–2 victory over the Galaxy in the season's last game. For the fourth time of the season, he was named in the Team of the Week for the fourth time.

Elis missed the first two games of the 2020 season due to a hamstring injury he sustained during preseason. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the MLS season was suspended after two games. With the MLS is Back Tournament in July, MLS will return to play in July. Elis made his season debut in Houston's first game of the tournament on July 13th, a 3–3 draw against LAFC with Elis scoring once in the match. In Houston's next game, he scored again but was also suspended for two yellow cards as Houston defeated the Portland Timbers 21-0. In a 5–2 victory over Sporting Kansas City on August 25, Elis had a goal and an assist, but he was later disqualified at halftime due to a back injury. In a 3–0 victory over Minnesota United and scoring once in a 2–1 victory over Kansas City, he appeared in two substitute matches in the Dynamo's next two games, with two assists and two assists in a 3–0 win over Minnesota United. Elis was held out of the Dynamo's next three games due to rumors surrounding him. He was seen at the airport in Houston on September 17 and announced his departure on social media two days later.

Bordeaux announced on June 9th, 2022, that the option-to-buy in Elis' loan contract had been enabled. In twenty-one appearances, he scored nine goals and one assist during the 2021–22 season with the club.

International career

Elis was the first representative of Honduras at the United Nations World Championship in 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship qualifying match over El Salvador, winning 5–2 by a goal. Elis scored a hat trick to help Honduras beat Costa Rica 3–0 in their next match. He played for four goals and helped Honduras finish top of the Central American league standings. Elis competed in the 2013 CONCACAF U-17 Championship, scoring once and assisting Honduras in finishing fourth. Elis made four appearances and aided Honduras in reaching the quarter-finals at the 2013 FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Elis was called up by head coach Hernán Medford to the Honduras national football team on September 30th, 2014. He made his senior debut against Mexico on October 9, 2014 in a friendly against Mexico, a 2–0 loss.

Elis was active on the Honduras U-21 team at the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games, where he made two appearances as Honduras finished 4th. He was also a member of the Honduras U-20 team, which competed in the CONCACAF U-20 Championships in 2015. Honduras helped the team finish in third place and qualify for the 2015 FIFA U-20 World Cup. Elis joined the senior national team in December 2015. In a friendly match against Cuba on December 16, 2015, he scored his first and second international goals. Elis scored his first goal in a competitive senior match on March 25, 2016, scoring once more against El Salvador in a World Cup qualifier match.

Elis was selected to the Honduras U-23 squad in July 2016 to compete in the Rio Olympics on July 25. He appeared in all six of Honduras' games and scored two goals, including the winning goal against South Korea, as he helped Honduras finish fourth in fourth place.

Elis was selected to the 23 man squad for the 2017 Gold Cup on June 29th. He appeared on four occasions and helped Honduras reach the quarterfinals, where they lost 1–0 to Mexico.

Elis was selected to the 23 man squad for the 2019 Gold Cup by Fabián Coito on June 6, 2019. However, Honduras and Elis were dissatisfied with the result as he failed to score in three of his three appearances, and Honduras finished last in their group.

Elis scored in the third place match in the inaugural CONCACAF Nations League tournament on June 6, 2021. In the 80th minute, Elis seemed to be the victor over Costa Rica in the 80th minute, but Los Ticos equalized five minutes later. Honduras, on the other hand, defeated Costa Rica in a penalty shoot-out for a bronze medal.

In the league match against Guingamp, the Honduras international was playing for Bordeaux.
