At an auction of works by top Australian artists, the first sale of a major piece by renowned landscape painter John Olsen since he died in April. The auctioneer characterized the price fetched by Life on the Edge of the Pond as'very pleasing.' Merryn Apma Daley was born in rural Victoria and raised by an elderly white couple who adopted seven other Aboriginal children. Daley was never identified by her birth mother, an Arrernte woman from Alice Springs who had been assaulted by a white man before she was 17. Daley has joined a long career in Aboriginal affairs and completed an innovative training program, and she is now dedicated to art fulltime. She has opened a gallery on Queensland's Sunshine Coast, attracting up to $10,000 for one of her works. Daley, who wants to see more Indigenous people in industry, is now sharing her inspiring tale.
