Albert Lawton Life

Albert Edward Lawton (31 March 1879 – 25 December 1955) was an English cricketer who played first-class cricket for Derbyshire between 1900 and 1910, as well as for Lancashire between 1912 and 1914.

He captained the Derbyshire team from 1902 to 1905, as well as playing for London County and Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

Early life

Robert Lawton was born in Dukinfield, Cheshire, the son of John Edward Lawton and his partner Ellen. Frederic Charles Arkwright, a cotton spinning business, moved to Matlock, Derbyshire, 1883, to revive Masson Mill to address the growing demand for sewing threads created by the popularity of sewing machines. Lawton senior built a substantial mansion Woodbank, which was later transferred to Cromford, overlooking Masson Mill.

Cricket career

Lawton made his Derbyshire debut in the 1900s and stayed with the team until 1910. He competed for London County from 1900 to 1903, and for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) from 1905 to 1914. Lawton captained Derbyshire between 1902 and 1905, but Maynard Ashcroft commanded the captaincy until 1904, which was part of 1904's Maynard Ashcroft. He reached three of his ten first-class centuries in 1902, all at Derby. Against the West Guiana, he scored 149 in two and a quarter hours. 146 against Hampshire and 126 against Warwickshire in just over two hours against Warwickshire. Grace's London County, 146 against Hampshire and 126 against Warwickshire. In the 1902 season, he hit 1,044 runs with an average of 27.47.

Around 1910, the Lawton family left Matlock, and Lawton played for Lancashire from 1912 to 1914. In 1920, MCC's last significant game was a one-off match. Lawton was a right hand batsman who batted 314 innings in 182 first-class matches. His best result was 168 and his average 24.78. He was a right arm slow-medium bowler who took 113 wickets at an average of 31.92. Although he was captain, Derbyshire ended the season twice at 10th place in the table and then 12th and 14th respectively. Lawton was described as a "strong" and a "protester hitter" by Wisden.

At the age of 76, Lawton died in Manchester.
